The 16th-ranked Navy squash team will look to capitalize on its early season momentum when it plays host to the first of two Navy round robins slated for the next two weekends in Annapolis. Ten men's and three women's teams will travel to the Naval Academy to play in the three-day round robin that begins Friday evening and will be staged at both the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts and the
Bancroft Hall Squash Courts.
Admission is free to all Navy squash matches. A reminder to fans planning on attending the match, vehicular access to the Naval Academy is limited to those with a Department of Defense identification card. A Look Back
• The 3-0 Mids opened the season a week ago with a pair of wins over Stanford (9-0), Cal (9-0) and dealt No. 13 Virginia a 5-4 loss in their home opener on Wednesday evening.
• Navy dominated the upper half of the ladder, as the Mids scored victories at the No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 positions. Meanwhile, rookie
Ben Korn picked up a solid 3-0 sweep at the No. 9 slot to help lead Navy to the upset.
• With the team scored tied at 4-4, the match came down to the No. 1 players for both schools - Navy sophomore
Jack Lentz and Virginia freshman Patrick McElroy. Lentz got the better of McElroy in the first game, 11-5, before McElroy pulled even with an 11-9 victory in the second. Lentz cruised to an 11-3 win in the third, but closing out the match would not be easy as both players competed like veterans. Lentz held a sizable lead in the fourth game, but McElroy roared back and took the lead from Lentz. Though Lentz faced game point multiple times in the fourth, he went on to claim a 12-10 decision to seal the match victory for the Midshipmen.
More on the Mids
• Three players lead the way for the Mids with 3-0 marks heading into the weekend -
Ben Korn,
Jack Lentz and team captain
Senen Ubina.
• Senior
Jamie Kjorlien is three wins away from becoming the third active Navy player to reach the 60-win milestone. With a 57-25 career mark, he is tied for 23rd on the Mids' all-time wins list. Classmates
Senen Ubina and
Dylan Sweeney are also on that list. Sweeney is tied for 19th with a 60-24 mark, while Ubina is 65-26 over four seasons and stands 16th on the wins list.
• Junior
Owen Davis picked up his 40th career victory in Wednesday night's 3-1 win over Virginia's Toby Hansford, while classmate
Michael Kacergis (39-17) will be looking for his 40th win this weekend.
