Women's Tennis Defeats Lehigh, 6-1

Box Score April 7, 2018

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (21-5, 2-1 PL) posted a 6-1 win over Lehigh (8-7, 2-1 PL) on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center inside the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy won its ninth-straight match and the Mids are 17-1 in their last 18 contests. Navy's nine-match winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest in program history.

"I was pleased with our performance across the board," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "Lehigh is definitely a much-improved team and we knew that going in. I liked the way we responded because Lehigh came out with a lot of energy. We did a good job of matching that energy and that intensity level."

Navy opened the day by sweeping the doubles point, 3-0, before winning five of six singles matches.

Sophomores Aimee Dervishian and Danika Kahatapitiya captured the first doubles victory with a 6-1 win over Grace Lin and Briana Maravich at No. 3 doubles. Dervishian and Kahatapitiya are 15-4 in doubles matches.

Senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Christina Auyeung and Casey Zhong at No. 1 doubles. Keller and Hodge improved to 21-6 in doubles matches this season.

Sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors and senior Claudia Mackenzie made it a doubles sweep with their 7-6 (7-0) win over Paula Gonzalez and Sibel Can at No. 2 doubles. Louie-Meadors and Mackenzie improved to 19-5 in doubles matches.

Sophomore Ansofi Wreder was the first to close out a singles match with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Lehigh's Can, the 2017 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, at No. 3 singles.

Navy then posted two more straight-set wins to clinch the team win at 4-0.

Hodge bested Lin at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and freshman Amanda Cyr defeated Zhong at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3.

Cyr is now 17-3 in singles matches this season.

Keller earned a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) win over Auyeung at No. 1 singles to improve to 18-14 in singles this season.

Louie-Meadors then posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Gonzalez at No. 2 singles to put Navy ahead 6-0. Louie-Meadors became the first Mid to reach the 20-win mark this season as she is now 20-8.

Maravich had Lehigh's lone singles win of the day at the No. 6 position over Dervishian, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-8)

"We had a couple of singles matches where we fell behind, but we did a good job of staying in there," said Puryear. "The ladies did a good job of focusing on the things they needed to do strategically to get back in the match. Now we will look forward to taking on Bucknell and Colgate tomorrow."

Navy improved to 10-0 all-time against Lehigh.

Navy will next host Bucknell (12-5, 2-0 PL) on Sunday at 9:00 AM and Colgate (5-11, 1-3 PL) on Sunday at 4:00 PM.
