Intercollegiate Sailing Grabs Two Top-Five Finishes

Navy continues its fall season with two more regattas this coming weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team took part in a trio of events this past weekend competing at home in Annapolis and on the road in Washington, D.C.

At home, the Midshipmen hosted the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship. Navy had three participants in the 18-boat field, where the windy and wavy conditions kept the regatta tight throughout the weekend. The Midshipmen competed hard in the tough field but were unable to earn a bid into the national championship.

Connor Bayless (So., Annapolis, Md.) led the way for Navy with an eighth-place finish, followed by Tyler Fleig (Sr., Portsmouth, R.I.) in 11th. Louis Margay (Fr., Chester Springs, Pa.) rounded out the Midshipmen in the field with a 16th-place finish.

On the road, Navy raced in a new concept of regatta where the top nine teams in the MAISA have coed and women's teams competing simultaneously in combined division regattas in each discipline on the same course.

With the new format, the racing stayed close throughout the weekend. In the coed event, Navy placed fifth out of nine teams. In the 18-boat combined division, Nicholas Gartner (Jr., St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) and Kimmie Leonard (Fr., Annapolis, Md.) led the Midshipmen and finished third overall, while the duo of Sean Linden (So., Brightwaters, N.Y.) and Bartholomew Winn (So., Carlisle, Pa.) placed 16th.

In the women's regatta, Navy placed fourth with Olivia de Olazarra (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and Emma Remis (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) pacing the team with a fourth-place finish. After a slow start on day one of the regatta, the duo of Jessica McJones (Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Sarah Barkley (Sr., New York City, N.Y.) battled back to finish 13th.

This coming weekend the Midshipmen host the Jen Harris Navy Fall Women's Regatta, while also traveling to Kings Point, N.Y. for the Intrepid Trophy.
