ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Playing its first match against the Mids in Annapolis since 2003, the 16th-ranked Cornell squash team (3-8) earned a 7-2 victory over No. 13 Navy (12-3) Sunday afternoon at the Halsey International Squash Courts.
"Tough one today," said first-year Navy head coach
Tyler Osborne. "A couple close games went Cornell's way and it certainly deserved the end result. They played the big points better than we did. We are going to have to dig within and find some of that extra motivation we had at the beginning of the year in this last stretch of matches.
"Both of the guys with our two wins - Dylan and Senen - are deserving of an extra shoutout. Both put forth tremendous performances to close out two tough competitors."
Navy lost the first five matches of the day, including a pair of 3-1 decisions that saw
Jamie Kjorlien (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) and
Ben Korn (Fr, Stevenson, Md.) win the opening game in their respective matches at No. 6 and No. 8, respectively.
Senior
Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.), who earned a huge 3-2 win a week ago against Williams, played a strong match against Cornell freshman Nicholas Goth Errington. Sweeney won his first two matches before Goth Errington closed to within one behind a 12-10 win in the third. Sweeney, however, would wrap up the match victory in the fourth with a 13-11 win. All four games were decided by two points.
The win by Sweeney gave him sole possession of 13th on Navy's all-time wins list with 68 over four seasons.
The Mids dropped the next two matches in extra games. Rookie
Ryan York (Fr, Hunt Valley, Md.) jumped out to a 2-0 lead (11-7, 11-6), but Cornell freshman Nikhil Iyer rallied to win the next three and capture the match win at No. 7. Meanwhile, the Mids' No. 1 player,
Jack Lentz (So, Philadelphia, Pa.), could not overcome a 2-0 deficit and was defeated by Cornell senior Andrew Muran in four.
Navy team captain
Senen Ubina (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) picked up the Mids final win of the day, earning a 3-0 sweep over sophomore standout Illia Presman, 11-8, 11-2, 12-10. It marked Ubinas' 73rd career victory and his is now just one win shy of joining Navy's all-time top 10 wins leader board.
The Midshipmen return to action next Saturday when they make the trip to Philadelphia to face No. 9 Drexel beginning at 1:00 pm.
