ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's intercollegiate sailing team finished 11th at the Jen Harris Women's Showcase in Annapolis, while also competing at the Oyster Bowl in Norfolk, Va.
The Midshipmen hosted the Jen Harris Women's Showcase Final in the second season of the new ICSA fall schedule, which includes more competitive interconference showcase regattas. The Jen Harris regatta served as the final round of the women's showcase event with the top 18 teams in the country competing in the fleet.
With a bleak forecast for wind, getting out to a strong start was key and Navy did just that. The Midshipmen used some aggressive starts to sit in third place following the first set of races. However, as the racing continued, the rest of the fleet followed suit with some aggressive starts of their own and the Midshipmen started to slip back in the field. On Sunday, Navy looked to make a charge back up the leaderboard but the wind did not cooperate. Only two races per division were completed with
Olivia de Olazarra and
Madeline Pruzan placing 11th in the A division, while
Brittney Slook and
Kelly Milliken finished ninth in the B division as the Midshipmen finished 11th overall.
Navy also had three boats compete at the Oyster Bowl hosted by Old Dominion. Along with the showcases, the new fall schedule also features several in-conference events with tighter competition. Five MAISA programs had boats in the field at the Oyster Bowl with each team having three or four boats in the fleet.
Connor Bayless and
Fiona Lobon won the competition with a first-place finish, followed by
Gray Benson and
Sean Linden in fourth place. Rounding out Navy's boats was
Louis Margay and
Carlyn Blauvelt in 13th place.
This coming weekend, Navy heads to Connecticut for a pair of events as the Midshipmen compete in the ICSA Coed Showcase and the Yale Women's Regatta.
