PHOENIX, Md. – The Navy women's golf team posted a fourth-place finish at the Towson Invitational after compiling a 51-over par 627 over the two-day event at the Eagles Nest Country Club in Phoenix, Md. The Midshipmen started with a 25-over par 313 on Monday and then they carded a 26-over par 314 on Tuesday to finish the event.
Shannon Gould (So., O'Fallon, Mo.) led Navy with a 7-over par 151 throughout the week to place fifth overall, which is her second top-five finish of the season and third top 10. In the first round, Gould fired a 2-over par 74, which was the highest round for the Midshipmen over the two days. She then finished with a 5-over par 77.
Morgan Frazier (Sr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) posted a top-15 finish for her best result of the fall season. The senior captain finished with an 11-over par 155, which was paced by a 4-over par 76 in the first round. She also posted a 7-over par 79 on Tuesday. Frazier recorded the only eagle of the tournament in the 41-golfer field after finishing the par-five seventh hole in just three shots in the second round.
The junior pair of
Katie Um (Chesapeake, Va.) and
Christine McDonnell (Suwanee, Ga.) were separated by just one stroke after finishing at 16-over par 160 and 17-over par 161, respectively. Um notched a 10-over par 82 and then cut four shots off her score from round one to round two with a 6-over par 78. McDonnell posted back-to-back rounds in the 80s for the first time since her freshman year. In the opening round, she finished with a 9-over par 81 and then followed with an 8-over par 80. Um finished in 25th, while McDonnell was tied for 26th.
Amelia Root (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) rounded out the Navy starting five at 25-over par 169 with a 16-over par 88 and a 9-over par 81 to place 33rd.
The Midshipmen had five players compete as individuals in the field with
Tori Smith (So., Arlington, Tenn.) and
Angelina Chan (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) finishing tied for 15th overall. The pair finished at 12-over par 156 with Smith finishing at 4-over par 76 in the first round and Chan was a shot back at 5-over par 77. In the second round, Chan carded a 7-over par 79 with Smith finishing at 8-over par 80.
Jacqueline Cherry (So., Ellicott City, Md.) and
Eve Worden (Fr., Phoenix, Ariz.) finished with matching 14-over par 158s to finish tied for 21st. The final Navy golfer in the field was
Micah Vincent (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) in 39th with a 32-over par 176.
Navy also had three of the four golfers in the field to finish 1-under par on the par threes throughout the two rounds. Chan, Cherry and Worden all completed the par threes at 1-under par.
Towson and St. John's finished tied for first at 21-over par 597 but the host Tigers won the tournament on a tiebreaker. Linda Wang of St. John's won medalist honors by five strokes at 3-under par 141.
The Midshipmen wrap up their fall season this coming weekend at the Delaware Invitational at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.
