CHARLESTON, S.C. – The fifth-ranked Navy rifle team (6-2) capped off its 3-0 weekend following a 4,668-4,481 win on the road against The Citadel (3-5) on Sunday morning at the Inouye Marksmanship Center.
Â
Gabriella Mayes (So., Rio Rancho, N.M.) led the Midshipmen with a career-best aggregate score of 1,173, which marked the first time she reached the 1,170 mark in her career. Mayes matched her career-high in smallbore with a score of 580 to lead the field and she was also the top shooter in air rifle with a 593. Mayes' 593 was a season-high and just one point off her career-high.
"We had another good bounce back today after a difficult match on Saturday," head coach
Mike Anti said. "We were still able to pull out a victory over North Carolina State on Saturday, despite having our lowest match score of the season. Today we had a much better day.
Gabriella Mayes led our team to a win over The Citadel with a personal best 1,173 total. We also had a number of solid performances with each team member contributing to our victory."
Â
In smallbore, Navy compiled a score of 2,313, which was two points shy of its season-high that was set last weekend at Ohio State. Mayes racked up 580 points in the discipline with
Mark Amdahl (So., Albuquerque, N.M.) and
Torrance Kang (Jr., Columbia, Md.) finishing right behind with matching totals of 578.
Kestrel Kuhne (Sr., Everett, Pa.) tallied the Midshipmen's final counting score in smallbore with a 577.
Â
Mayes continued her strong day with a 593 in air rifle and she fired five 99s in her six sets of 10 shots, along with a 98. Amdahl and
Michael Zanti (So., Norfolk, Va.) nearly joined Mayes in the 590s as they both finished with 588s. Navy's final counting score came from Kang who tallied a 586 as the Midshipmen combined for 2,355 points in air rifle.
Â
Following Mayes' 1,173 aggregate mark, Amdahl followed with a 1,166 and the pair of Kang and Zanti finished with total scores of 1,164. The Midshipmen had seven shooters compete on Sunday with all seven shooters posting the top seven aggregate scores in the event. Navy also had the top seven shooters in air rifle and top six shooters in smallbore. Alexander McAlear led the Bulldogs for the second-straight day with a 1,128 on the day.
