Women's Basketball Takes Win Streak on the Road to Fairfield

Mids and Stags to meet for first time on the hardwood Wednesday night

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Coming off of a 3-0 homestand the Navy women's basketball team will test its win streak on the road with a Wednesday night tilt at Fairfield University. The Mids (5-3) will take on a Stags (1-4) team that is playing just its second game in 17 days. The action at Alumni Hall in Fairfield is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off. The action will be streamed live on ESPN+ (available with subscription) with live stats available as well.

Action-Packed Stretch: Six Games in 12 Days
Wednesday's matchup between the Mids and Stags concludes a busy stretch for Navy as the team will play six games between Nov. 22 and Dec. 4. After starting this run of play with a pair of road losses at Vermont and Maine, the Mids came back to Annapolis and swept a three-game homestand with victories over Air Force (Wed.), Kennesaw State (Sat.) and La Salle (Sun.). Following Wednesday's Navy-Fairfield game, the Mids will step away from the court for 15 days while they focus on final exams. A home matchup against George Mason on Thursday, Dec. 19 is Navy's next game.

Last Time Out
It was home cooking once again for Navy as the Mids closed out the 2019 Navy Classic with a 61-46 victory over La Salle on Sunday. After collecting wins versus Air Force and Kennesaw State earlier in this holiday week, the Mids (5-3) capped the two-day Navy Classic with a championship game triumph over a tough La Salle (6-2) club that boasted a strong inside-outside game.

For the third straight contest, the Mids had three players record double-digit scoring figures led by Sophie Gatzounas' game-high 15 points. Morgan Taylor and Mary Kate Ulasewicz aided Navy's effort with point totals of 14 and 10, respectively. Additionally, Gatzounas tallied her second double-double of the year with 10 rebounds against the Explorers.

In a game of runs, Navy started out with an initial 11-2 lead by the 3:08 mark of the first quarter. Gatzounas scored the first nine points for the Mids. The visitors from Philadelphia found their shot late in the period and closed the stanza on a 7-0 run to make it 11-9 at the first quarter break. La Salle added three more points to that run in the beginning of the second quarter. Down 12-11, the Mids immediately had a rebuttal with six unanswered points. With the score 17-12 for Navy at 7:16, La Salle swung the momentum pendulum back in its favor with a 7-0 run over the next 1:29 of play. The game stayed in the one-possession neighborhood for the ensuing three-plus minutes as Navy held just a 25-24 lead with 2:58 remaining in the second quarter. Unwilling to settle for a one-point advantage going into the locker room at halftime, the Mids concluded the first half on a 7-0 run with a Kolbi Green three-pointer highlighting this span of play.

Coming out for the second half up 32-24, Navy took its first double-digit point lead (36-26) by the 7:34 mark. Jennifer Coleman capped the quarter of action for Navy as she hit a buzzer-beating fadeaway three-pointer to send the game into the fourth quarter with the score 47-36.

That trey invigorated her teammates and the Mids started the final period of play in fast form with eight unanswered points. Leading 55-36, Navy continued thwarting La Salle's offense as the Explorers went without a point until the clock showed 3:57 left to play. That 6:20 dry spell for La Salle dating back to the third quarter left the visitors with too big of a hole to dig out of though the tried vigorously to do so. A brief 8-0 run cut Navy's advantage down to 11 points, but six of eight shooting down the stretch at the foul line helped the Mids record a comfortable 15-point victory, 61-46 over the Explorers.

For the game, Navy outshot La Salle, 36.9 percent (24-65) to 34.0 (17-50) from the field and 76.9 percent (10-13) to 55.6 percent (5-9) in free throw attempts. The Explorers held the edge in three-point shooting, 31.8 percent (7-22) to 21.4 percent (3-14). The Mids turned in a substantial +13 advantage on the glass as they out-rebounded the Explorers, 45-32 on Sunday. Navy's total was bolstered by 22 offensive rebounds versus only 21 defensive rebounds by La Salle.

Navy's 61-46 victory closed out the two-day 2019 Navy Classic that saw the Mids come away with the championship. A five-player All-Navy Classic Team was named at the conclusion of the event; Sophie Gatzounas earned top-billing as the Tournament MVP (16.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 61.9% FG percentage, 66.7 3PT percentage). She was joined on the team by her fellow Midshipmen Mary Kate Ulasewicz (13.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 5.5 APG).
