Pair of Duals Ahead for Navy Wrestling, Including Senior Night on Thursday

Following an eight-day layoff from competition, the Navy wrestling team (5-2, 3-1 EIWA) returns to action with a pair of duals this week. The Mids open the week Monday evening (6:30 pm) in Norfolk, Va. where they will battle Old Dominion (8-5, 5-2 MAC) at the Ted Constant Center. Navy then plays host to conference foe American (4-4, 4-2 EIWA) on Thursday evening (7:30 pm) at Alumni Hall in the Mids' final home match of the season.

Both matches will be streamed. Monday night's match can be viewed via Old Dominion's web site (odusports.com) for a nominal charge, while a free live video stream will be available for the American match via PatriotLeague.TV or  NavySports.com(.)

Tickets
• Admission for Thursday's home match against American is $10 for adults and $5 for youth (18 years & younger).
• Groups of 20 or more can purchase tickets for $5 and $3 in advance by reaching out to Jordan Albright (410-293-8791) or Kristin Toler (410-293-8743).

Parking / Yard Access
• A reminder that vehicular access to the Naval Academy is limited to those drivers with a Department of Defense identification card.
• It is suggested that fans park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ($5 per vehicle) and ride the FREE shuttle bus to and from the match.
• Buses will run every 15 minutes starting one hour before the match and will continue running throughout the event.
• Note that a government issued identification card must be carried and presented by visitors to the USNA prior to being allowed onto The Yard.
• Fans may also park outside of the Naval Academy grounds and walk on with proper identification.

Navy Notebook
• Navy owns dual wins over Maryland (31-6), Bucknell (26-9), Hofstra (30-12), Duke (22-16) and Drexel (25-12), while dropping matches to No. 2 Ohio State (28-9) and Lehigh (28-6).
• The Mids have competed in five tournaments to date - Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open (no team scoring), Navy Classic (3rd/16 teams), Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (17th/43 teams), Southern Scuffle (5th/23 teams) and All-Academy Championship (1st/8 teams).
• Fifth-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt earned his 100th collegiate victory with a 22-16 win over Duke in Annapolis on Jan. 20. He owns a 101-78 career record, including a 34-16 mark at Navy.
• Senior team captain and 17th-ranked Nicholas Gil (141) leads the way in the wins column with a 22-5 record. He captured his 20th collegiate victory on Jan. 20 with a 6-3 win over Lehigh's Ryan Promrinca. Gil has now reached 20 or more wins in each of his four seasons at Navy. He went 25-16 as a freshman, 21-7 as a sophomore and 32-10 as a junior. He was an NCAA qualifier as both a freshman and junior.
• Sophomore Casey Cobb (133) added his name to the 20-win club after capturing the All-Academy Championship title with a 3-0 record. Cobb stands 21-7 after sitting out his freshman campaign.
• Juniors Spencer Carey (174) and Joshua Roetman (197) could potentially join Nicholas Gil and Casey Cobb as members of the 20-win club this week. Both Carey and Roetman head into this week's duals with 19 wins apiece.
• Nicholas Gil earned his 100th collegiate victory with a semifinal victory over VMI's Dom Gallo at the All-Academy Championship on Jan. 26. With a 100-38 career record, he is only the 16th wrestler in program history to reach 100 career wins. Gil is tied with former teammate Zack Davis for 15th on the all-time wins list and trails 14th-place Aaron Kalil (2009-12) by just one win.
• Joshua Roetman (197) is the sole Navy wrestler who is undefeated among the starters. Roetman missed the Mids' Drexel dual on Feb. 1.
• Cody Trybus, Jonathan Carrera and Alex Benoit made their dual debut in the Mids' win over Drexel. The trio of wrestlers were forced to push up a weight class due to injures to Nicholas Gil, Spencer Carey and Joshua Roetman. Trybus earned a 4-2 win in sudden victory 2, while Carrera scored a 7-4 win.
• Navy will honor its five senior wrestlers (team captain Nicholas Gil, Anthony Cable, Jonathan Carrera, Connor Doyle and Thomas Ott) and one senior manager (Daniel Bannister) prior to the start of Thursday night's home match.

NCAA Coaches Rankings
• The first set of NCAA Coaches Rankings were released on Jan. 24  and six wrestlers among Navy's 10-man lineup are currently among the top 33 in their respective weight class.
• Senior 141-pound Nicholas Gil and junior 174-pound Spencer Carey lead the way at No. 18. At 22nd is 149-pound Jared Prince, 27th is 165-pound Tanner Skidgel, 30th is 133-pound Casey Cobb and 31st is 197-pound Joshua Roetman.
• An RPI was also due to be released, however, there were not enough wrestlers that had accumulated a sufficient number of matches to run an accurate RPI.
• The next release of NCAA Coaches Rankings and RPI will be on Feb. 14.

Old Dominion Notebook
• Under the direction of 14th-year head coach Steve Martin, Old Dominion enters Monday night's nonconference match with an 8-5 overall mark and a 5-2 record in Mid-American Conference action.
• ODU is coming off a third straight win after a 16-15 victory over Ohio, which had to go into criteria. The Monarchs own wins over Northwestern (30-10), Central Michigan (24-9), Northern Illinois (23-12), Kent State (30-20), Chattanooga (21-15), SIU Edwarsville (28-13), Duke (24-17) and Ohio.
• The Monarchs currently have three wrestlers who appear in the national rankings in Michael McGee (125), Sa'Derian Perry (141) and Larry Early (149). McGee (3-1 over #21 Shakur Laney) and Early (10-6 over #20 Zac Carson) are coming off individual wins over ranked opponents at Ohio.

The Series
• Monday's match marks the 11th meeting between the two programs in a series that dates back to 1966.
• Navy owns a 7-3 series advantage, including a 2-0 mark in matches contested in Norfolk.
• Old Dominion had beaten Navy in three consecutive matches (22-12 in 2009, 19-18 in 2016 and 23-10 in 2017), before the Mids scored a 26-8 victory over the Monarchs a year ago in Norfolk.

American Notebook
• Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Teague Moore, American travels to Annapolis with a 4-4 overall mark and 4-2 EIWA record.
• The Eagles lost their first three matches of the year before rallying to win four of their last five. They have wins over Columbia (26-10), Hofstra (22-12), Drexel (21-16) and Bucknell (22-21)
• American won three of the final four matches against Bucknell to earn a 22-21 come-from-behind last Friday.

The Series
• Thursday's match marks the 15th meeting between Navy and American with Navy holding a decisive 13-1 lead.
• The inaugural match in the series was on Jan. 12, 1997, when Navy posted a 30-10 victory in Annapolis.
• Winners of each of the last seven matchups, Navy's only loss in the series was on Jan. 16, 2009, when the Eagles handed the Mids a 19-17 setback in Annapolis.
• The series took a two-year break in 2011 and '12, but met every year otherwise since 2004.
• The Mids own a 5-1 record against the Eagles in matches wrestled in Annapolis.

What's Ahead
• Navy will have eight days off before traveling to West Point, N.Y. for the annual Army-Navy Star Match. Action is set for 4:00 pm on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Christl Arena.
• The Mids own a 49-8-5 series advantage against the Black Knights, but are looking for their first win at West Point since Feb. 24, 2013 (22-10).
