Navy Wrestling Travels to West Point for Annual Star Match

The Navy wrestling team (6-3, 3-2 EIWA) will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon with the annual Star Match against archrival Army (7-3, 6-1 EIWA).  Action is set for 4:00 pm at Christl Arena.  A free live video stream will be available by logging on to NavySports.com or on Army's Knight Vision streaming platform.

Navy Notebook
• Fifth-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt has guided the Midshipmen to a 6-3 dual meet mark that features a 3-2 record in EIWA matches.
• Navy owns dual wins over Maryland (31-6), Bucknell (26-9), Hofstra (30-12), Duke (22-16), Drexel (25-12) and Old Dominion (24-10), while dropping matches to No. 2 Ohio State (28-9), Lehigh (28-6) and American (19-18 tie-breaker).
• The Mids have competed in five tournaments to date - Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open (no team scoring), Navy Classic (3rd/16 teams), Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (17th/43 teams), Southern Scuffle (5th/23 teams) and All-Academy Championship (1st/8 teams).
• Sharratt earned his 100th collegiate victory with a 22-16 win over Duke in Annapolis on Jan. 20. He owns a 102-79 career record, including a 35-17 mark at Navy.
• Four wrestlers have topped the 20-win mark this season, including senior team captain Nicholas Gil (141) who leads the way with a 24-5 record. He captured his 20th win of the season on Jan. 20 with a 6-3 win over Lehigh's Ryan Promrinca. Gil has reached 20 or more wins in each of his four seasons at Navy. He went 25-16 as a freshman, 21-7 as a sophomore and 32-10 as a junior. He was an NCAA qualifier as both a freshman and junior.
• Gil, who enters the weekend ranked 13th by Intermat, earned his 100th collegiate victory with a semifinal victory over VMI's Dom Gallo at the All-Academy Championship on Jan. 26. With a 102-38 career record, he is only the 16th wrestler in program history to reach 100 career wins. Gil is for 13th on the all-time wins list alongside Luke Rebertus (2009-12) and trails 12th-place Ed Prendergast (2005-08) by just four wins.
• Sophomore Casey Cobb (133) added his name to the 20-win club after capturing the All-Academy Championship title with a 3-0 record. Cobb heads into the weekend with a 22-8 record and will make his Army-Navy debut after sitting out his freshman campaign.
• Juniors Spencer Carey (174) and Joshua Roetman (197) both earned their 20th win of the season in the Mids' 24-10 victory over Old Dominion on Feb. 11. Carey stands 21-11 and has amassed more wins this season that his first two seasons combined (6-6 Fr, 9-4 So). Roetman, meanwhile, owns a 21-7 record and in his first season as the Mids' starter, he, too, has more wins this winter than his first two seasons combined (7-5 Fr, 8-7 So).
Joshua Roetman (197) is the sole Navy wrestler who is undefeated among the starters. Roetman missed the Mids' Drexel dual on Feb. 1. He enters the weekend with an 8-0 record in duals this winter.
• Only 3 of Navy's 10 projected starters have previously wrestled in the Army-Navy dual. Nicholas Gil is 2-0 (2016, '18), Jared Prince is 2-0 (2017, '18) and Joshua Roetman is 0-1 having pushed up to wrestle at heavyweight in 2017.
• Army and Navy share four common opponents - Drexel (Navy, 25-12 / Army, 29-5), American (Navy 18-19 TB / Army 21-13), Bucknell (Navy, 26-9 / Army, 22-19), Lehigh (Navy, 6-28 / Army, 6-28)
