LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Navy track and field team opened up the outdoor season with a solid performance at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge. The meet was highlighted by the Mids' women's 4x100m relay that posted the seventh fastest time in program history and Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) running the third fastest time in Navy history in the 110m hurdles.

"There was a lot of good things for us today," Director of Navy Track and Field Jamie Cook said after the meet. "It was a really good first meet. People came out ready to compete today. The attitudes were good and we performed well. The weather was great. It was good to be outside for the first time this season. We were able to manage our day. I was proud of the performances."

On the women's side, the Midshipmen posted a pair of times/marks that rank in Navy's all-time top 10. The Mids notched the seventh fastest time in school history in the 4x100m relay and the 10th best distance in the shot put, while the men's team notched the third fastest time in the 110m hurdles.

The relay team of Amanda Henson (West Barnstable, Mass.), Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas), Regine Tugade (Dededo, Guam), and Chloe Alfieri (Harvard, Mass.) combined for a school-record time of 46.76 in the 4x100m relay. Alfieri also posted the sixth fastest time in program history in the 200m dash with a time of 24.74. Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) registered a throw of 14.03m (46-00.50) in the shot put to record the eighth best distance in Navy history.

Thompson clocked the third fastest time in program history in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.15, while fellow hurdler Cameron Hurd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) just missed getting into the Navy top 10 by 0.01 seconds, in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.31.

The men's team posted 133 points to win the four-team men's meet, while the women's team notched 98 points to finished second among six teams.

Navy continues its California Spring Break this week, training and participating in team-bonding out in San Diego. The Midshipmen return to competition on Saturday, March 16, as the team takes part in the annual Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet.
