ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy freshman
Nick Barry (Islip, N.Y.) won a career-best 17 of 23 draws against ninth-ranked Loyola over the weekend en route to being named the Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week. In addition to Barry, Army's Miles Silva (offense) and AJ Barretto (goalkeeper) and Lehigh's Craig Chick (defense) and Tommy Schelling (rookie) were among those players recognized by the league office on Monday as Patriot League Players of the Week at their respective positions.
The 17 wins by Barry ties as the seventh-best mark in head coach
Rick Sowell's eight seasons at Navy, while it's the second most won by a Navy freshman. Barry also collected a career-high tying six ground balls.
One of the few players in program history who have served in a starting faceoff role as a freshman, Barry already ranks 19th on the Mids' all-time leader board with 58 wins. Meanwhile, he stands third on Navy's all-time freshman faceoff wins leader board and is tied for second in attempts with 122. Brady Dove, a four-time All-Patriot League selection and 2017 graduate, holds both records with 163 wins and 289 attempts.
Barry is the second Navy player to draw league recognition this season, joining junior
Ryan Kern who was named goalkeeper of the week following Navy's 11-6 win over UMBC on Feb. 15.
The Midshipmen (4-3, 2-1 Patriot League) return to action on Saturday when they play host to 17th-ranked Lehigh (5-3, 3-0 PL). Faceoff is set for 12:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. A free live video stream will be available on PatriotLeague.TV, while Pete Medhurst and
Joe Miller will have the call on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV as well as 1500 AM WFED. Navy will also host its annual Meet the Mids autograph session following the conclusion of the contest.
