MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – The Navy women's golf was unable to rally in the final round of the Patriot League Women's Golf Championship as the Midshipmen finished second overall for the second-straight season. Navy finished with a three-round total of 43-over par 907 and was four strokes behind Boston University who finished with a 39-over par 903 to win the championship at Independence Golf Club.
Navy fired an 8-over par 296 in the final round for its lowest round of the tournament.
Christine McDonnell (So., Suwanee, Ga.) finished with the second-lowest round in tournament with a 1-under par 71 and finished as the tournament runner-up with a total of 7-over par 223. She finished one-stroke behind tournament medalist Hanako Kawasaki of Boston who finished at 6-over par 222.
After holding the 36-hole individual lead,
Shannon Gould (Fr., O'Fallon, Mo.) slipped to third overall in the tournament field of 33 golfers following a 6-over par 78 on Sunday. In her first Patriot League Championship, Gould carded a 9-over par 225 for the tournament.
With the top-three finishes from McDonnell and Gould, the Navy pair earned First Team All-Patriot League honors. This McDonnell's second-straight first team honor.
Morgan Frazier (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) moved up a spot from 10th to ninth in the field after posting a score of 1-over par 73 during the third round. Frazier ended the tournament with a total score of 14-over par. After finishing as the championship runner-up in 2018, Frazier earned Second Team All-Patriot League this season after her top-10 finish this weekend. This the second All-League recognition for Frazier in as many seasons.
Katie Um (So., Chesapeake, Va.) finished just one shot outside of the top 10 and was 13th overall in the field. Um shot a 2-over par 74 in the final round and was at 15-over par 231 for the tournament.
Amelia Root (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) carded a 6-over par 78 in the third round and finished tied for 21st with a 23-over par 239 for the tournament.
Jacqueline Cherry (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) finished her day at 13-over par 85 and compiled a three-round score of 33-over par 249 to place 27th in the field.
Boston used a 5-over par 293 on Sunday to hold off Navy's rally on the back nine to win the tournament with a 39-over par 903. The Terriers also swept the individual awards this season after Kawasaki was named the Patriot League Women's Golfer of the Year and Patriot League Rookie of the Year while head coach of Boston Bruce Chalas was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year.
Along with finishing as the runner-up for the second-straight Patriot League Championship, the Midshipmen also had the individual runner-up for the second time in as many seasons after Frazier was the runner-up last season and McDonnell finished second this season.
Navy finishes the year with its best scoring average in program history at 304.2 and the Midshipmen captured their first two tournament victories in program history this spring. McDonnell also posted the lowest season average in school history at 75.0 and she has the lowest career average at 75.8. Frazier is just behind in both categories as she averaged 75.7 this season -- second in program history-- and she has a career average of 77.6. During the 2018-19 season, Navy had six different golfers average below 80 for the year.
