PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Navy track and field team concluded competition in the 125th running of the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The Midshipmen competed in three men's events on the day, registering five IC4A qualifying times/marks and a pair of all-time top-10 performances.
"I am happy with the result," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "I think events like the Penn Relays gets everyone's confidence up. The team gets to see that there not much separating them and the bigger schools. It gets them to believe in themselves knowing they can compete with anyone. It gets our team excited to compete in that environment. There must have been 40,000 people there today. And to be able to compete on that stage and do well, it gives them confidence moving forward. Now we go ahead and get ready for Patriot League next week."
A day after setting the school record in the 4x400m relay, the foursome of
Eric Hughey (Lee's Summit, Mo.),
Simon Petsch (Billings, Mont.),
Cameron Hurd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), and
John Finnegan (Spring, Texas) were at it again. The relay team combined for a collective time of 3:08.92, just a fraction of a second (0.14) shy of matching their record-breaking performance on Friday.
The 4x100m relay team of
Aaron Watson (Union City, Mich.),
Austin Pierce (Dahlonega, Ga.),
Evan Lexo (Groton, Mass.) and
Richard Hansen (Houston, Texas) registered an IC4A qualifying time of 41.40.
The Midshipmen also competed in the hammer throw. In the championship division,
Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J.) and
Mike Milcarek (Woodinville, Wash.) each recorded IC4A qualifying distances. Brennan's throw of 62.63m (205-05) was the 10th best in Navy history. Milcarek notched a distance of 57.90m (189-11), while
Tommy Reeder (Kiln, Miss.) posted a throw of 53.38m (175-01) in the hammer throw college division.
Navy returns to action on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, as the Midshipmen travel to Worcester, Mass. For the 2019 Patriot League Outdoor Championship hosted by Holy Cross.
