ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team finished off its regular-season schedule with a first-place finish at the MAISA Coed Championship for the America Trophy, which it hosted this past weekend. The Midshipmen also had four boats compete at the Arrigan Regatta in Washington, D.C.
Â
The MAISA Coed Championship featured the top 18 teams in the conference with the top nine advancing to the Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship next month. The event started out very windy on Saturday with gusts topping 30 knots at times. Navy was able to handle the extreme conditions early in the event to take an early lead on the field. After the wind tapered off toward the end of the first day, Navy maintained its lead throughout.
Â
Sunday's racing started in a delay to wait for the wind to fill. The final day featured two races per division before the cutoff time of the event. Navy's versatility showed after winning races in heavy, moderate and light air throughout the weekend.
Â
The Midshipmen led wire-to-wire to capture their first America Trophy since 1995.
Parker Loftus,
Sean Linden,
Connor Bayless and
Sally Johnson finished second in the A division while
JC Hermus,
Brittney Slook, Linden and
Ana Mier won the B division.
Â
Following the competition in Annapolis on Sunday, the All-MAISA awards were announced. Mier, Johnson and
Kimmie Leonard were named All-MAISA Crews and Mier was also selected as a finalist for MAISA Crew of the Year. Bayless and Hermus garnered Second-Team All-MAISA Coed Skipper honors and Loftus was a First-Team All-MASIA Coed Skipper selection. Navy's head coach
Ian Burman was also named the MAISA Coach of the Year.
Â
The Midshipmen also had four boats compete in the Arrigan Regatta at Georgetown. The event was scored as two separate regattas with 18 boats in the field. During Saturday's racing,
Tyler Fleig and
Fiona Lobon finished fifth,
Louis Margay and
Anna Cutler placed eighth,
Gray Benson and
Madeline Pruzan finished ninth and the pair of
Jack Carminati and
Bartholomew Winn placed 17th in the field. On Sunday, Benson and Pruzan were third overall followed by Fleig and Lobon in sixth place. Rounding out Navy's weekend at the event was Margay and Cutler in seventh and Carminati and Winn in 16th.
Â
Navy will be away from competition for the next three weeks before traveling to the ICSA Women's National Championship in Newport, R.I., from May 21-24.
