ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy men's lacrosse players
Christian Daniel (So / Owings, Md.),
Jacob Mandish (So / Davidsonville, Md.),
Ryan Kern (Jr / Middletown, Del.) and
Nick Cole (Fr / Ashburn, Va.) earned Patriot League weekly honors on Monday, garnering Offensive Player, Defensive Player, Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week recognition, respectively, following the the Mids' win last Friday over 16th-ranked Boston University. Meanwhile, Daniel was also named to the 10-player USILA National Team of the Week.
Daniel was instrumental in the Mids' come-from-behind victory over the Terriers where he scored a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Specifically, he played a hand in six of Navy's seven second-half goals, scoring three goals and dealing out three assists, including sparking a 3-0 Navy run to open the third quarter and giving the Mids the lead for good. Daniel scored the game-tying goal and fed
Jack Sweeney (Fr / Glenelg, Md.) for the go-ahead goal. The eight-point performance by Daniel marked the most points by a Navy player since 2017 when
Dave Little scored 9 goals on 9 shots against Lehigh.
Mandish, who has split time at close defense and long-stick midfielder this season, was responsible for one of the biggest plays in the game. With under eight minutes to go in the game and the Mids' two men down, he intercepted a pass in Boston's offensive box box to squelch the Terriers' EMO. The turnover by Boston resulted in a fantastic Daniel-aided goal by co-captain
Ryan Wade (Sr / Coronado, Calif.). Mandish was also tasked with matching up against the nation's seventh-leading goal scorer in senior attackman James Burr. After scoring a goal in both the first and second quarters, Mandish held Burr scoreless for 38 minutes between the second and fourth quarters. Mandish also aided Cole's goal in the opening minutes of the game, marking just his second career point.
Kern played perhaps the best game of his career in the win over BU, making countless acrobatic saves on point-blank shots en route to a career-high tying 18 saves. He pitched in nine stops as the Mids' defense held the Terriers to just a pair of goals in the first 27 minutes of the second half while Navy went on a 7-2 run and built a 13-9 lead.
Behind his 18-save performance, Kern became just the 10th netminder in program history to reach the 400-save milestone. He stands 10th on the list with 416 saves. He also became just the third goalkeeper in the last 20 years to post 150 saves in a single season (joins RJ Wickham, 188 in 2010 and John Connors, 154 in 2016), closing out the year with 167 saves which is tied for the 15th most in school history.
Cole equaled his career high (vs. Maryland) with a four-point performance (2G, 2A) against BU. It was just his second career multi-assist game of the season.
Cole ended the year as the team's fourth-leading scorer with 29 points on 20 goals and nine assists. He is just the 12th freshman in program history to score 20 goals, while falling just a point shy of becoming the 14th rookie in school history to reach the 30-point milestone.
Kern has now been named the league's goalkeeper of the week six times over his career, including twice this season, while Daniel, Mandish and Cole are first-time recipients of their respective awards. Daniel was named the league's rookie of the week once a year ago.
