NEWPORT, R.I. – In Navy's second championship event at ICSA Nationals, the Midshipmen notched a sixth-place finish at the Laser Performance Team Racing National Championship over the weekend in Newport, R.I.
Â
The event featured 16 teams and started in a delay in the morning of day one. The sea breeze filled from the southwest and built throughout the afternoon on Saturday. Navy sailed well to start but was hurt by a number of fouls right before the finish in some of the early races and suffered some losses. The Midshipmen were 3-5 and in danger of not making it past the first round. However, Navy battled back and won the last seven races of the first round late on Saturday and early on Sunday to move up in the field.
Â
Sunday's racing featured southwest winds similar to Saturday's, which helped the Midshipmen advance to the gold eight round and were in a position to continue to climb up the leaderboard, where the field would be cut down to the top four for the final round. Navy won two of the first three races in the gold round and was poised to make a charge into the top four.
Â
With the forecast not favorable on Monday, the final races of the gold round were completed on Sunday. Following the two full days of racing, Navy could not keep the momentum going and just missed the top four to place sixth overall.
Â
"It was a young team this year and the experience gained through this championship will be of great value going forward," head coach
Ian Burman said after the event. "We should also be extremely proud of how we fought back from a tough spot early on in the championship."
