After opening the 2019-20 campaign a week ago with a second-place finish at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate, the Navy men's golf team will look to build upon its success this weekend at the 2019 edition of The Doc Gimmler. Hosted by St. John's, the two-day, 54-hole event is slated to begin on Saturday on the Red Course (par-70, 7,092 yards) at Bethpage State Park. Tee times for Saturday's first round begin at 7:30 am.
The Field
Navy is among a 14-team field that includes the host, St. Johns, along with Florida Southern, Hofstra, Holy Cross, Johnson & Wales, Lafayette, La Salle, Lehigh, Manhattan, Rhode Island, Saint Peter's, Towson and Yale.
Rhode Island (281-279-281=841) claimed the 2018 Doc Gimmler team title with a 1-over par 841, a 3-stroke advantage over Connecticut, Johnson & Wales and Yale, who tied for second with a 4-over par 844. Yale's James Nicholas won individual medalist honors with a 7-under par 203, just a stroke ahead of Gerald Mackedon of St. John's.
Navy took seventh in last year's 54-hole tournament and shot its low round of the year with a 2-under par 278 in the final round.
Charlie Musto shot the low round of the year, as well, carding a 3-under par 67 over the final 18 holes.
The Course
Bethpage State Park features five 18-hole regulation golf courses, including the world-renowned Black Course which was the site of the United State Open in 2002 and '09, The Barclays in 2012 and '16 and will play host to the Ryder Cup in 2024, the PGA Championship in 2019 and The Barclays in 2021 and 2027. The Red Course at the Bethpage State Park opened in 1933 in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Red Course has served as the home of the Long Island Open Championship qualifier's round since 2012.

Opening-Weekend Rewind
The Mids shot the weekend's third-lowest score among the 17-team field, including the second-lowest in the final round, to tie for second at the season-opening Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate last Sunday at the Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury, Connecticut. The Mids entered the day in a three-way tie for fifth, but surged ahead with a 4-over par 292 over the final 18 holes to close out the tournament with a 14-over par 590 (298-292).
Nicholas Klock paced the Mids with his second career top-10 finish. Klock covered the 36-hole tournament with a 1-over par 145 (73-72) to capture a personal-best seventh-place finish among a 90-player field. He previously finished among the top 10 a year ago at the Explorer Invitational where he shot an 8-over par 150 to tie for 10th among a field of 41.

The Mids will utilize the next handful of weeks to prepare for its annual Star Match against Army on Oct. 5-6. Due to renovations at the Naval Academy Golf Club, Pine Valley Golf Club will play host to the event.
