Former Two-Sport Athlete Kate Herren named Marine Corps Athlete of the Year

Class of 2012 grad played soccer and lacrosse at Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Kate Herren (USNA '12) was recently presented the award of 2019 Marine Corps Female Athlete of the Year by the Commandant of the Marine Corps at the organization's Combined Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, January 22 at the Marine Corps Base Quantico.

A two-sport athlete during her time at the United States Naval Academy, Herren was a member of both the women's soccer and women's lacrosse teams. A native of Auburn, Washington, Herren played defense for the Mids' soccer team for the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons. She appeared in 82 career games, tallying three goals and 13 assists. Her soccer career culminated in 2011 as she served as the team's captain, while earning All-Patriot League First Team and All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team playing honors. Following her senior season with the soccer team she joined the lacrosse program for its spring 2012 campaign. In 2012, the Navy women's lacrosse team went 18-3, won its third straight Patriot League title and advanced to take on North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Herren appeared in five games as a defender for the Mids that season.

On January 22, 2020, the Commandant of the Marine Corps hosted the Combined Awards Ceremony, recognizing outstanding Marines across various categories. Awards were presented to the 2019 Athletes of the Year, along with other honorees such as Career Planner of the Year, Marine Security Guard of the Year, and Drill Instructor of the Year. The ceremony, hosted aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, recognized Marines for their exemplary dedication to and representation of the Corps.

The 2019 Athletes of the Year are:

  • Captain Kate Herren – 2019 Female Athlete of the Year

  • Staff Sergeant John Stefanowicz – 2019 Male Athlete of the Year

  • Sergeant Raymond Bunker – 2019 Male Athlete of the Year

Captain Herren is currently attached to the 12th Marine Corps District, Marine Corps Recruiting Command, in San Diego, CA. In 2019, she served as team captain of the Silver Medal-winning All-Marine Women's Rugby Team. She was also selected to the All-Tournament Team. Captain Herren is currently training with the US Women's Olympic Rugby Team, in the hopes of being selected for the final team to represent the USA in the Tokyo games.

Sharing the men's award are Staff Sergeant Stefanowicz and Sergeant Bunker, two exceptional NCOs and members of the All-Marine Wrestling Team. Both placed first in their weight classes at various events in 2019, to include the Armed Forces Championship, the World Team Trials, and the Dave Schultz International Tournament. In addition, both fought at the 2019 World Championships in Khazakhstan, with Sergeant Bunker placing 12th in the world at his weight and SSgt Stefanowicz placing 8th in the world at his weight.
