ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy swimming and diving men's and women's teams combined to win nine out of 13 events to firmly take command of the 2020 Patriot League Championship Friday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md. The Navy women's team has totaled 662 points and holds a 294-point advantage and the Navy men are in first place by 251 points with their total of 728.5 points.
Navy totaled wins in seven of the 10 individual swimming events contested Friday night, while also claiming first in the two relays. In the women's one-meter diving, the Midshipmen claimed second, third and fourth.
"The team did a terrific job in the preliminaries in terms of placement," said Navy men's swimming head coach
Bill Roberts. "I am not sure we have executed that part as well as we did today in any other meet. Timewise, we had several very strong performances in the morning as well. Going into finals this evening, we simply wanted to improve on each of those performances. We were nearly perfect in that regard. Overall, I was very happy with how our team raced today. I think that was probably the highlight for today's competition. Each swimmer was able to put together a very smart race. With that, we need to get a good night's rest in advance of tomorrow's preliminary session."
"Another very good day for our team,' said Navy women's swimming head coach
John Morrison. "The men's and women's programs continue to feed off of each other's successes. Sydney's meet record to start the evening session set the tone and expectation of racing with a lot of heart. Finishing with a come-from-behind 200 free relay was a terrific way to end the day."
"It was a bittersweet day today," said Navy diving coach
Rich MacDonald. "The women dove exceptionally well and very consistent. It was a really close final and they gave a maximum effort. We just didn't get the win today. Still, I am really proud of how the girls stayed in the meet and competed strongly."
Navy concludes competition in the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday. Swimming trials being at 10:00 a.m., while diving preliminaries start at 1:00 p.m. Finals of both swimming and diving starts at 6:00 p.m. Free live video and live results will be available throughout the meet.
