ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– A 15-match streak of the Navy men's tennis team winning the doubles point came to an end Monday, but the Mids still were able to rally and split the two matches played by the team on the day in North Carolina.  Navy (16-6) won a 4-3 decision at UNCG (4-5) and lost a 5-2 match at Campbell (5-3).
 
In the match against the Spartans, Navy lost the three doubles matches by scores of 7-5 at No. 1 and 6-3 at both Nos. 2 and 3.
 
"Our guys got off to a slow start in doubles," said Navy associate head coach John Moreland.  "We made a run at UNCG to get back into the matches, but couldn't overcome our start." 
 
Five of the six singles matches were extended into three sets.  The one match to finish in straight sets was the No. 6 contest where Navy's Christian Pumpelly (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) defeated Cooper Wyett, 6-4, 6-4, to even the proceedings.  The Spartans regained a 2-1 lead when Nico Grewe won a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision over an Jan Kjellberg (So., White Plains, N.Y.) at No. 4 singles.  Greg Durham (Sr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) tied the match at 2-2 with his 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Roper Rogowski at the No. 4 flight.
 
Derrick Thompson (So., Towson, Md.) gave Navy its first lead of the day as he posted a 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 1 flight.  Jake Fishkin (So., Baltimore, Md.) then placed the match-clinching fourth team point on the board for the Mids with his 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.
 
"In singles, we adjusted well to playing our first outside match of the year," said Moreland.  "The guys battled hard after UNCG took early leads in three of the six matches.  We continued to fight and, in the end, we were able to get the four singles wins we needed.  It was a team effort; we handled the pressure well and were able to wear down a very solid opponent and close out the match.  I am very proud of the effort shown by every player today."
 
Navy had its chances in doubles against Campbell.  The teams split the first two matches to finish before Campbell's Raphael Calzi and Gustavs Lukstins recorded a 6-4 win over Jack Dabek (So., Dublin, Ohio) and Andrew Ton (Jr., Milpitas, Calif.) to secure the available point.
 
The Camels won in straight sets at Nos. 5 and 2 singles, respectively, to increase their advantage to 3-0.  Matthew Lee (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) then recorded a 6-3, 7-5 win over Ted Williams at No. 6 singles to make the score 3-1.  Campbell won the next two matches to finish to tally the victory.
 
"We were unable to capitalize on some opportunities in doubles," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.  "That made it difficult for us in singles.  A number of the matches were close, but did not win enough to turn the tide back our way.
 
Navy will remain in North Carolina for matches Tuesday at Elon and Davidson.
