Women’s Tennis Suffers 6-1 Setback at North Florida

Navy is back in action on Tuesday against Appalachian State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Navy (16-3) dropped its first contest in 11 matches after it suffered a 6-1 loss on the road to North Florida (10-1) on Monday evening. The Midshipmen picked up two matches after winning at No. 2 doubles and No. 6 singles.
 
Navy also lost the doubles point for the first time in the last six matches after going 1-2 in doubles and missing out on the first point of the match.
 
"Today was a hard-fought match," head coach Keith Puryear said. "The match today really came down to how we consistently handled the critical points in the match and management of the dynamics that come with playing outdoors. It was a great match to learn from and we will try to use what we experienced in tomorrow's match."
 
After the pair of Katreina Corpuz (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Meghana Komarraju (So., Vienna, Va.) won the first game at No. 1 doubles, North Florida's duo of Ana Paula Melilo and Lucia Montano won six-straight games to win, 6-1. The Osprey's clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with Valentina Mariotto and Sean Lodzki earning a 6-3 decision against Miranda Deng (Jr., North Potomac, Md.) and Amanda Cyr (Jr., Cary, N.C.). In the final doubles match on the court, Aimee Dervishian (Sr., Milton, Ga.) and Annalise Klopfer (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) held off Constanza Gorches and Kendall Nash to win a 7-5 match at No. 2 doubles.
 
The win by Dervishian and Klopfer earned pushed the pair's record to a team-best 8-2 in the spring season.
 
North Florida carried the momentum from doubles over to singles and won three matches in straight sets to secure the victory. At No. 4 singles, Mariotto grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Komarraju and then No. 98 Montano picked up a 6-2, 6-4 contest against Klopfer at the top-seeded singles match. The clinching point for the Ospreys came at No. 3 singles with Gorches earning a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Jillian Taggart (Fr., Fair Oaks, Calif.). 
 
In the final three matches left on the court, the Midshipmen were able to win a set in each contest to force a third-set tiebreaker. In the match on court five, Samantha Choi (Fr., Warrenville, Ill.) lost the opening set, 6-1, but came back to win the second set, 6-3. In the 10-point tiebreaker, Choi dropped a narrow 10-6 decision to close out the match against Nash. At No. 2 singles, Kacey Moore (So., Wellington, Fla.) rebounded from a 6-4 loss in the first set to win the second set 6-2, however, Moore was unable to complete the come from behind win against Melilo, 10-4.
 
Trailing 6-0 in the match, Casey Accola (Fr., Winter Garden, Fla.) earned the Midshipmen's lone team point at No. 6 singles against Lodzki. Accola rolled to a 6-1 win in the first set and just missed a sweep after dropping a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). In the third-set tiebreaker, Accola held off Lodzki to win 10-8 as North Florida earned the 6-1 victory.
 
Navy is back in action on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Appalachian State in Orlando, Fla.
