The 14th-ranked Pitt wrestling team (1-0) overcame an 11-point deficit by winning the final five matches of Sunday's dual, defeating Navy (0-1) 22-14 at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. The two programs wrestled 20 additional matches which have been deemed "extra matches" by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the NCAA and will count towards an individual's record this season due to the pandemic.
"It was finally good to be in the arena and see the guys with the singlets on and not just in the practice room, but finally get a chance to compete in such a crazy season," said first-year Navy head coach
Cary Kolat, who was introduced as the Mids' eighth coach in program history last March. "I would like to have had the win over Pitt. We needed some guys to step up. 165 and 174 were critical matches and 184 through heavyweight, we had some issues up there. We had some chances to win the dual. Overall, I'm happy with how the guys performed with the interruptions in training and the philosophies we have been trying to push on them and the things that we were looking for from them when they got out there in the singlet. I feel pretty good about that and the staff feels pretty good about that. We've got some things to work on when you see things in competition where a guy is succeeding and when he's not succeeding. Overall, I'd like to have the win, but I'm okay with how they competed."
Second-year starter
Logan Treaster (Sr / Newton, Kan.) opened the dual by scoring a 5-1 victory over Pitt redshirt freshman Colton Camacho at 125 pounds. However, an 8-3 win by fourth-ranked 133-pound Micky Phillippi over
Jacob Allen (Jr / Poway, Calif.) knotted the match at 3 apiece.
Team captain and reigning 141-pound EIWA Champion
Cody Trybus (Sr / Elkton, Md.) sparked a three-match winning streak by the Mids when he secured a 6-4 win over 14th-ranked Cole Matthews. Trybus, who stand 13th in the rankings, pulled ahead late in regulation with a takedown, but was unable to ride out Matthews who earned the match-tying escape with 10 seconds to go. Trybus would not be denied, however, as he took Matthews to the mat with 33 seconds remaining in sudden victory for the win.
"We were ready for an explosive shot to come low through the ankles and Cody never allowed him to pull the trigger on that," added Kolat. "He wrestled a smart match and the overtime go was a smart match."
Casey Cobb (Sr / Kuna, Idaho), an at-large NCAA Tournament selection a year ago at 133 pounds, earned a hard-fought 5-3 win over Luke Kemerer at 149, while rookie
Andrew Cerniglia (Nazareth, Pa.) dominated Pitt's Tyler Badgett to pick up a 16-1 tech fall just eight seconds into the second period. After back-to-back takedowns by Cerniglia, he ended the second period with 10-consecutive points off near falls (4-4-2).
"Andrew in his debut, the guy looked awesome, he looked tough. He's a hammer on top and he's great on his feet, too."
The Cerniglia victory gave Navy a 14-3 lead midway through the match, however, it would by the Mids' final win of the night.
The 165-pound match featured seventh-ranked
Tanner Skidgel (Sr / Tulsa, Okla.) from Navy and 10th-ranked Jake Wentzel of Pitt. Both champions in their respective conferences, the two put together an exciting bout. After a scoreless opening period, Wentzel was tough in riding out Skidgel the entire second frame. Skidgel battled back, however, and took a 2-0 lead in the third with a two-point near fall. That lead would be short-lived as Wentzel was able to get the reversal and tack on a two-point near fall to take a 4-2 advantage, as well as the point for riding time to earn the win.
"Tanner's only error in the match was he was waiting for the referee to help him with the stall call. He learned a lesson today. If we get the stall call, great, but he needs to wrestle out of that position."
Redshirt freshman Jared McGill bested Navy's
Dean Caravela (Sr / West Caldwell, N.J.) by a 3-2 count at 174 pounds and 18th-ranked Gregg Harvey picked up a 12-7 victory at 184 pounds over
Shane Finney (Jr / Carlsbad, Calif.), who was making his first-career dual appearance.
Pitt took its first lead of the match (17-14) when 2020 All-American and fifth-ranked Nino Bonaccorsi posted a 24-9 tech fall over 197-pound
Malcolm Wiley (So / Tyrone, Ga.), who also was making his first-career dual appearance.
The Panthers sealed the team win behind a Jake Slinger tech fall (15-0) at heavyweight against the Mids'
Riley Smith (Jr / Mason, Mich.).
"The one thing I love about these guys, these guys are really coachable. In fact, I would say it's one of my coachable teams. From being a first-year coach and just getting to know them and being in the room with them. These guys are extremely coachable and they listen. I think we will go to Clarion and we will continue to get better."
