Sprint Football Returns to Division Play Against Alderson Broaddus

The game will mark the first meeting between the two teams in Philippi, W.Va.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (3-0, 1-0 CSFL South) travel to Philippi, W.Va. for a Collegiate Sprint Football League-South Division match up with Alderson Broaddus (0-3, 0-1 CSFL South) on Saturday at the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. and live stats and live video will be available throughout the game.
 
All-Time Series
The Midshipmen lead the all-time series, 1-0, winning the first meeting (W, 49-0) against the Battlers on Nov. 1, 2019 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game will mark the first meeting between the two teams in Philippi, W.Va. The two teams did not meet in 2020 due to the coronavirus restrictions.
 
Scouting the Midshipmen
Navy enters the weekend 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in division play. The Midshipmen have been balanced on offense, rushing for 638 yards and passing for 645 yards for 1,283 yards of total offense. Defensively, the Mids have limited opponents to just 13 points (4.3 points per game) in three games this season. The Midshipmen have held opposing offenses to 455 yards of total offense on 412 yards passing and 43 yards on the ground.
 
Senior captain Matthew McGee (Port Charlotte, Fla.) leads the team with 308 yards on the ground with four touchdowns, while Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.) and Stephen Copeland (Ava, Mo.) have tallied 125 and 120 yards, respectively. Totta has found the end zone twice, while Copeland has added a score.
 
Brandon Atwood (Gentry, Ark.) paces the passing attack, going 40-for-62 for 548 yards and seven touchdowns. He is joined by William Leong (Irvine, Calif.) who is 6-for-7 for 78 yards and a pair of TD passes. Andrew Margiotta (Vienna, Va.) leads the team with 291 receiving yards on 12 receptions with four touchdowns. Jake Smith (Union, Ky.) leads the team with 13 receptions, tallying 176 yards with a score. Marco Pezzini (Salinas, Calif.) joins the receiving corps with a pair of TD catches, while Totta and Jackson Suddath (Houston, Texas) also have hauled in passes for scores.
 
Paul Kuehler (Roanoke, Va.) leads the defense with 17 total tackles, including a team-high 11 solo stops. The linebacker has a team-best 4.5 tackles for loss with a team-high 2.5 sacks. Mike Garnett (Dallas, Texas), Adam Weissenfels (Richland, Wash.), and Jake Karczewski (Chicago, Ill.) each have double-digit stops. Garnett has 14 tackles, while Weissenfels and Karczewski have 13 and 10, respectively. Garnett and Karczewski are second on the team with 3.0 TFLs each, while Weissenfels has an interception and a forced fumble. Jobe Long (Bay City, Mich.) also has an interception, while Jack Costigan (Middletown, N.J.) has also forced a fumble. Karczewski and Nadir Emlemdi (Cincinnati, Ohio) have each added blocked kicks on the season.
 
Mychal Golden (Jonesboro, Ark.) leads the team with 25 points on the year. The kicker is 3-for-5 on field goal attempts and 16-for-16 in extra-point tries.
 
Weissenfels Named NAAA Athlete of the Week (Oct. 6, 2021)
Navy senior sprint football player Adam Weissenfels (Richland, Wash.) was named the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman after helping win the Star for the Midshipmen in the annual Army-Navy sprint football Star Game (W, 14-6) last weekend.
 
Leading 7-3 in the fourth quarter, Navy lined up for a field goal on fourth and four from the Army 24 yardline. Weissenfels completed a pass to Alex Totta (Kanas City, Kan.) for nine yards and a first down on the fake field goal. On the ensuing play, Navy scored a touchdown to secure the victory.
 
In addition, Weissenfels tallied 40 yards on three kickoff returns, while returning five punts for 20 total yards, finishing second on the team with 60 all-purpose yards. Defensively, Weissenfels helped hold the potent Black Knight offense to under 200 yards total yards (193 yards of total offense), including -10 yards rushing, 203 passing yards, and no touchdowns. The senior finished the game with six tackles, including five solo stops, while adding 1.0 tackles for loss for four yards.
 
Last Time vs. Alderson Broaddus (Nov. 1, 2019)
Navy posted a 49-0 shutout victory over CSFL newcomer Alderson Broaddus at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game served as Senior Day for the team's 14 seniors.
 
Defensively, Navy posted its first shutout of the season. The Mids' defense came up big to keep Alderson Broaddus out of the end zone. The Midshipmen forced six punts, while forcing a pair of fumbles, intercepting five passes. Five different players – Troy Monroe ('20), Pat Guinan ('20), Adam Jennings ('21), Tom Jacobsen ('21), and Lane Condie (Lovelock, Nev.) – picked off Alderson Broaddus passes. Justin Newell ('21) picked up a Battler fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Jack Thomas (Darnestown, Md.) also picked up a fumble recovery on the night.
 
Offensively, the Midshipmen tallied 383 total yards compared to 139 by the Battlers. Navy rushed for 237 yards, while passing for 146. The Mids tallied three rushing touchdowns, while adding a pair of score through the air. Caleb Champion ('20) led the charge with 101 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.) tallied 61 yards with a score, while quarterback Braydan Chmiel ('21) posted 48 yards on the ground with a TD. Through the air, Jake Foss ('21) finished the game 7-for-12 with a touchdown strike. Chmiel was 4-for-8 for 43 yards. William Leong (Irvine, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with 27 yards and a TD. J.T. Thompson ('20) paced the receiving corps with four catches for 42 yards, while Eric Spicer ('21) finished with 45 yards and a TD reception. Newell added a touchdown catch for his second score of the night.
 
Jared Swenson ('20) scored 11 points in the game, splitting the uprights with a pair of field goals and adding five extra points.
 
Last Time Out: at Army (Oct. 2, 2021)
Navy recorded a 14-6 victory over rival Army on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium in West Point, N.Y.
 
Defensively, Navy was able to hold the potent Army offense to under 200 total yards (193), including holding the Black Knight rushing attack to -10 yards on 34 total carries. The tallied 12 tackles for loss, including eight sacks on the day. Paul Kuehler (Roanoke, Va.) led the way with eight tackles (6 solo, 2 assisted), 3.0 TFL, including 1.5 sacks. Mike Garnett (Dallas, Texas) and Ed Shead (South Hampton, Pa.) added seven stops apiece and Garnett paced the squad with two of Navy's seven pass break ups. Shead finished with 2.5 sacks for 23 total yards. The defense also blocked a pair of kicks as Nadir Emlemdi (Cincinnati, Ohio) blocked a field goal and Jake Karczewski (Chicago, Ill.) blocked a punt.
 
Offensively, the Midshipmen finished with 207 total yards of offense, including 137 yards through the air. Brandon Atwood (Gentry, Ark.) led the passing attack, going 14-for-26 with a touchdown and two interceptions. Adam Weissenfels (Richland, Wash.) completed a crucial pass on a fourth-and-four for nine yards, which continued a Navy scoring drive.
 
Matthew McGee (Port Charlotte, N.C.) led the rushing attack. He finished with 22 carries for 50 of the Mids' 70 rushing yards on the day. McGee scored on a 15-yard rush to give Navy some insurance late in the game. Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.) tallied 20 yards as the duo accounted for all of the Midshipmen's rushing output.
 
Jake Smith (Union, Ky.) and Marco Pezzini (Salinas, Calif.) each finished with five receptions on the day. Smith paced the offense with 60 yards, while Pezzini chipped in 19 with a score. Andrew Margiotta (Vienna, Va.) added four receptions, finishing second on the day with 47 yards.
 
Mychal Golden (Jonesboro, Ark.) remained perfect on the season in extra-point attempts, converting both tries on the day.
