No. 7 Virginia Fights Off Upset-Minded Mids

The Navy squash team (5-1) was dealt its first setback of the 2021-22 campaign on Wednesday evening, as seventh-ranked Virginia (1-0) scored a 9-0 victory over the Mids in Annapolis. Navy, ranked No. 21 nationally, opened its season over the weekend in Chicago, where it cruised to 9-0 victories over Chicago, Indiana, Washington University in St. Louis, Ohio State and Northwestern, while Wednesday night's match marked Virginia's season opener.

The Highlights
• The evening began with a short dedication ceremony recognizing Paul and Joanne Prager for their generous gift to help renovate the Navy squash facilities. The Prager Family Squash Facility features the newly-built one-of-a-kind, all-glass doubles court, while other enhancements include modernized locker rooms, a team study room and fan viewing areas. Additionally, technology throughout the facility has been updated to include permanent scoreboards and live streaming capabilities throughout the courts.
• Ben Korn (Sr / Stevenson, Md.) was one of two players on the Navy roster to extend his individual match, as Korn posted an 11-8 win over Tyler Mackesy in the opening game at the No. 5 position. Korn nearly took a 2-0 lead in the match, but Mackesy was able to edge Korn in the second, 11-9, and went on to take the match in four games.
• Matt Wang (Fr / Malvern, Pa.) struggled in his first game against UVA's Taha Dinana at the No. 3 spot, as Dinana shut out Wang, 11-0. The Navy rookie, however, showed little fear and continued to fight throughout the match. Dinana built a 2-0 lead by winning game two, but Wang outmuscled Dinana in the third, 14-12. Wang led 10-8 in the third, but after multiple back-and-forth points, Wang pushed the match to a fourth game. Dinana built a solid lead in the fourth, but Wang pushed to the very end, dropping an 11-8 decision.

What's Ahead
• Navy will have little rest before hitting the court for a three-day tournament at home beginning on Friday evening.
• The Mids play Fordham in their opener at 7:00 pm, face Boston U. (12:00 pm) and Haverford (2:30 pm) on Saturday and close out action for the weekend on Sunday with a 10:00 am match against Denison.
• All four of the Navy matches will be streamed online, while live scoring will also be available. Links for both can be found on Navy's website, NavySports.com
