Playing its first game in 11 days, Navy found itself in a competitive bout with the William & Mary Tribe on Sunday, December 13 at Kaplan Arena. A 10-0 run over the final minutes of the first quarter and into the second gave the hosts a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Even in most statistical categories with the Tribe, the Mids' effort was short-circuited by 21 turnovers and 10 William & Mary three-pointers during the game. For the third straight contest, team captain Sophie Gatzounas led Navy in scoring as she posted 16 points on 6-11 shooting, while adding eight rebounds and five assists in 39 minutes of action. Kolbi Green was the Mids' second-highest scorer with 11 points. Off the bench, freshman Kristina Donza netted seven points and four rebounds.
With the score 13-10 through one quarter of play, the second stanza opened with the host Tribe scoring the first seven points to go up 20-10 before extending their hot streak out to 12-2 and a 25-12 score by 4:45. Gatzounas tried to re-invigorate the Mids' offense that was just 1-4 from the field with six turnovers over the opening six-plus minutes of the quarter. In a run of three possessions between 3:47 and 2:45, Gatzounas recorded a pair of successful free throws and a layup to draw the Mids within 11 at 27-16. That would be the margin at the half as each team made one field goal down the stretch.
Â
Coming out of the halftime intermission, the Mids leaned on Sydne Watts early as the freshman scored the team's first four points. Unfortunately for the visitors, Watts' feat was answered by a pair of William & Mary three-pointers and the score advanced to 37-22 in favor of the Tribe. Navy didn't let that 15-point deficit last for long as the Mids held the Tribe scoreless for the next 2:53, while tallying six points of their own to make it 37-28 at 3:53. The Mids' kryptonite, the Tribe's accurate three-point marksmanship, came back as a late quarter response when William & Mary extended its lead back out to 15 points, 48-33. The Tribe shot 3-4 from the field in the final 2:41 with all three makes coming from distance.
Â
Navy's put the clamps on William & Mary defensively as the visitors attempted their fourth quarter comeback. With the Tribe scoreless for the first 2:55, the Mids were able to shave seven points off their deficit as Morganne Andrews, Ciera Hertelendy and Donza all made baskets on consecutive possessions. With the score 48-40, William & Mary scored their only points of the first five-plus minutes with a pair of free throws at 7:05. Another field goal by Donza at the 6:08 mark helped Navy get back within single-digits, 50-42. The Tribe's only successful field goal attempt of the quarter was a Sydney Wagner layup that came at 4:12. As a team, William & Mary only shot 12.5 percent (1-8) in the fourth quarter. While Navy did a good job of controlling William & Mary from the field, the Mids were unable to draw the score closer than eight points over the final 2:56 as the hosts went 8-12 from the foul line. Gatzounas buoyed Navy's final comeback attempt with seven points in that final stretch. In her collegiate debut, MiKenzie Yim-Harvin made the last basket of the game to make it a 60-51 final score.
Â
For the game, William & Mary outshot Navy from the field, 39 percent (19-49) to 37 percent (18-49), while both teams shot 38 percent from three-point range, though the final tally was 10-of-26 for the Tribe and three-of-eight for the Mids. Both teams also made 12 free throws as Navy as 12-15 for 80 percent, while William & Mary was 12-16 for 75 percent. Navy held a significant 15-rebound advantage on Sunday, 40-25. The Mids' margin was aided by a 13-4 advantage on the offensive boards. Andrews led Navy's effort with 10 rebounds off of the bench. Gatzounas added eight rebounds.

Last Time Out, Friday versus Monmouth
Looking to get into the win column in its first road game of the 2021-22 season, the Navy women's basketball team was tripped up by a lengthy scoring drought in the second quarter and were unable to draw closer than nine late in a 57-46 loss at Monmouth University. The Mids' offense struggled throughout most of the night as they shot 30 percent as a team and turned the ball over 27 times at OceanFirst Bank Center on Friday night against the Hawks. Jennifer Coleman paced Navy as the squad's only double-digit scorer as she finished with 22 points on seven-of-18 shooting, including three three-pointers. She added seven rebounds and five assists to her final stat-line over 35 minutes of action. Kolbi Green and Morganne Andrews aided the Mids' effort as Green recorded nine points and six rebounds, while Andrews went for six points and seven rebounds.
The action on Friday night opened evenly as the game was tied 6-6 after three minutes and 10-9 for Navy at the 4:36 mark. The next time down the court Monmouth's Kaci Donovan hit a three-pointer to swing the score back in the host's favor and the Hawks would go on to lead for the final 34:23 of play. That trey was the first of eight straight points and Monmouth built out a seven-point advantage, 17-10. Over the final three-plus minutes of the quarter, the Mids scored four of the last seven points courtesy of baskets by Andrews and Coleman. Leading 20-14 after one quarter of play, Monmouth shut out Navy over the first 7:58 of the second period and found itself ahead 32-14. A late 6-0 run helped the Mids send in the game into halftime at 32-20. Navy's struggles in the second quarter could be contributed to 12 turnovers and a one-for-nine shooting line from the floor.
Â
Both teams had a hard time tallying points over the first 3:46 in the third quarter as only five combined points were added to the scoreboard, three for Monmouth and two for Navy. With the score 35-22, Coleman put the Mids' offense on her back with eight points in a row between 6:14 and 4:34 to draw Navy closer at 40-30. Monmouth won the final segment of play in the quarter and took a 45-32 lead into the break.
Â
Offensive struggles were a common theme into the fourth period as the first five minutes saw the Hawks net just a three pointer, while the Mids' lone basket was a coast-to-coast layup by Coleman at 6:54. Navy's defense silenced Monmouth down the stretch as the host's final field goal of the game came at 5:00 when Stella Clark sank a three-pointer to go up 51-34. With the Hawks held to just six free throws over the second half of the quarter, the Mids scored 12 points to tighten the final score to a 57-46 margin. A trio of three-pointers over a 40-second span from 1:09 to 0:29 helped Navy's closing push; Green, Sydne Watts and Coleman all recorded treys during this run of action.
Â
For the game, Navy outshot Monmouth from the field, 29.5 percent (18-61) to 27.9 (17-61). The Hawks held a minimal edge in three-point shooting at 29.2 percent (7-24) to 25.0 (5-20). Both teams had success at the foul line shooting 80-plus percent, though the Hawks went 16-20 versus a 5-6 showing for the Mids.
