ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy swimming and diving teams will play host to a pair of meets this weekend in Lejeune Hall. The Mids will first face Loyola Saturday at 1 p.m. before competing against George Washington Sunday at 1 p.m.
Each Navy and Loyola team has posted a 1-1 record in dual meets this year. George Washington will be competing in a dual meet for the first time.
Both meets are closed to the public.
Navy Update
Navy last competed three weeks ago when the Mids swept Towson. Navy won the men's meet by the score of 188-100 and took the women's meet by the count of 196-81. The two teams combined to win 28 events on the day.
George Washington Meet – Women
George Washington has shown a steady improvement at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in recent years. The Colonials placed third at the 2018 meet, second at the 2019 event and won the 2020 conference title.
Navy holds a 14-4-1 advantage in the all-time series with George Washington. The Mids defeated the Colonials, 210-89, last year in Annapolis in what was the first meeting between the teams on a dozen seasons.
Navy won 13 of the 16 contested events during last year's meet with George Washington. The Mids return swimmers and divers who accounted for eight of the team's 11 individual event victories.
Returning multi-event winners are
Ashley Boddiford (Sr., Oviedo, Fla.), both backstroke events; Hannah Monrau (Jr., Germantown, Md.), both diving boards; and
Sydney Harrington (Jr., Fairfax, Va.), both butterfly events. Also back for Navy are
Katie Corbi (So., Waxhaw, N.C.), the winner of the 50 free, and
Brooke West (Jr., River Forest, Ill.), who won the 100 free.
George Washington returns Stine Omdahl Petersen, who won both breaststroke races last year, and Andrea Moussier, who won the 1000 free.
George Washington's lone competition to date this year occurred when the program took part in the Feb. 5-7 Cavalier Invitation in Charlottesville, Va.
George Washington Meet – Men
George Washington won the Atlantic 10 Conference title in 2017, '18 and '19 and finished in second place at the 2020 championship.
Navy has won each of the last 10 duals against George Washington and has posted an overall record of 13-1 in the series. The Mids recorded a 199-94 victory over the Colonials one season ago on The Yard. That was the first meet between the teams since the 2007-08 campaign.
The Mids totaled 14 victories in last year's 16-event slate. The lone George Washington victories came from the team's 400 freestyle relay and by George Aspougalis in the 100 breaststroke. Aspougalis returns for the Colonials this season.
Navy returns five Mids who totaled nine event victories last season against George Washington. Leading the way are
Ryan Waters (Sr., Basking Ridge, N.J.), who won the 500 and 1000 free;
Daniel Cook (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.), who won the 100 and 200 free; and
Dominick Wallace (Sr., La Jolla, Calif.), who earned the victories in both backstroke events. Additional returning event winners are
Micah Oh (Sr., Kent, Wash.), 200 fly;
Dean Nguyen (Sr., Seattle, Wash.), 200 breast; and
Ethan Tack (Jr., Dix Hills, N.Y.), 400 individual medley.
This will be the first dual meet and second competition of the year for George Washington.
Loyola Meet – Men
Loyola opened the season with a 157-143 loss to Towson on Feb. 13, then defeated Mount St. Mary's, 189-73, on Feb. 20. The Greyhounds finished in third place at last year's Patriot League Championship.
Navy has posted a 9-0 record against Loyola. Saturday's meet will be the first between the programs since the 2012-13 season.
Loyola Meet – Women
The Greyhounds dropped a 180-120 decision to Towson in their first meet of the year before winning a 197-75 dual against Mount St. Mary's. Loyola ended the 2020 Patriot League Championship in sixth place.
Navy has compiled an 18-1 record against Loyola in dual meets. The teams will be meeting for the first since the 2012-13 campaign.
