Victoria Tran named Patriot League Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Kristina Dzhandzhapanyan joins Tran on Academic All-Patriot League Team

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Recognized for its success on the field earlier this week with three major award winners and four All-Patriot League honorees, the success of the Navy women's soccer team in the classroom was recognized on Friday with two players earning spots on the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Headlined by Victoria Tran's selection as the 2020-21 Patriot League Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Navy also had Kristina Dzhandzhapanyan garner a spot on the exclusive 11-person team. Navy's two nods tied Lafayette and Loyola for most in the league by one program.

The 2020-21 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year, Tran has shown excellent form both on the pitch and in the classroom throughout her career in Annapolis. Now a three-time All-Patriot League honoree, Tran, an honors robotics & control engineering major, was named to the 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team last year following her sophomore season. As a junior in 2020-21, Tran has thrived on the field leading the Mids to the Patriot League South division title with three goals and two assists over eight regular season games during this two-part season. Her goal and point totals are tied for tops in the conference. A member of the Academic All-Patriot League Team in 2019, Tran has been named to the Naval Academy's Dant's or Dean's List in each of her first five semesters at the academy and currently holds a 3.97 GPA. A native of Clarksville, Maryland, she ranks top-15 in both of USNA's Class of 2022 for Overall Order of Merit and Military Order of Merit.

As a program, this is the tenth time that a Navy student-athlete has won this top award ...

            Sydney Fortson: 2018, 2019
            Elizabeth Hoerner: 2012, 2013

            Lizzie Barnes: 2008
            Kate Macfarlane: 2001
            Nicole Aunapu: 1997, 1998
*(Note, the first Academic All-Patriot League Team was named in 2010, prior to that season only a Scholar-Athlete of the Year was selected by the conference)

Dzhandzhapanyan, the Mids' senior team captain during this 2020-21 season, is recognized on the Patriot League All-Academic Team for the first time in her esteemed four-year career. In each of her past two seasons, Dzhandzhapanyan has been lauded for her success on the field as she named to the All-Patriot League First Team as a junior in 2019 and to the league's second team earlier this week. On the field as a senior, Dzhandzhapanyan played in all eight regular season games for Navy tallying a pair of assists. Named to the national Senior CLASS Award Top-30 list in March, the honors quantitative economics with math major, has earned her way onto the Naval Academy's Dant's List in all seven semesters of her stay at the academy. The Diamond Bar, California native currently holds a 3.76 GPA in her studies and ranks top-15 in USNA's Class of 2021 in Military Order of Merit and in the top 10 percent of her class in Overall Order of Merit.

Eight of 10 Patriot League institutions were represented on the Patriot League All-Academic Team.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or student-athletes in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out during the summer.

The voting for the all-Academic squads was conducted by the League's women's soccer sports information directors, who could not vote for their own student-athletes.
