Navy Plays Host to 2021 Patriot League Men’s Golf Championship

The newly-restored par-70 Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis will serve as the host venue for the two-day, 54-hole Patriot League Men's Golf Championship which is slated to begin on Saturday. The eight-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday, followed by the final round on Sunday with each day's action teeing off at 8:00 am. The winner of the event receives an automatic bid to one of the six NCAA Regionals (The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind.; Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.; Championship Course at UNM in Albuquerque, N.M.; Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.; Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn.; and Tumble Creek Golf & Country Club in Cle Elum, Wash.), held May 17-19.

If the individual medalist is not part of the championship-winning team, he, too, will qualify for the NCAA Regionals. This has happened five times in League history, with Army West Point's Peter Kim qualifying in 2014 and 2017. Navy's Chris House qualified in 2013, the Black Knights' William Park qualified in 2012 and Navy's Billy Hurley accomplished the feat in 2004.

Three of the six regional sites will have 13 teams and 10 individuals competing, while three will have 14 teams and five individuals. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional site (six individuals total) will advance to the national championships at Grayhawk.

About the Mids
The Midshipmen have claimed the Patriot League Championship title seven times (1998-2000-2001-2003-2008-2012-2018), including back-to-back-to-back titles in 1998 (fall), 2000 and 2001. In addition, eight different Midshipmen have won the individual title, while five Navy players have captured rookie of the year honors.

Three of the six players slated to represent Navy in this weekend's championship have previously played in the tournament, including Charlie Musto (Sterling, Va.) who was crowned the 2018 Patriot League Player of the Year as the individual medalist and Rookie of the Year at the par-72 Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. He followed up with a 17th-place finish as a sophomore playing at Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton, N.Y. Senior Ward Wilkinson's (Ashland, Va.) lone appearance in the league championship was his freshman season when he tied for 42nd. Meanwhile, junior Chad Deegan (Newport Beach, Calif.) garnered Second-Team All-Patriot honors as a freshman in 2019 with his ninth-place finish in the tourney.

Juniors Nicholas Klock (Moraga, Calif.) and David Miccoli (Ludlow, Mass.), along with second-year standout Keegan Shreves (Potomac, Md.) will make their championship debut this weekend.

Navy has played in two tournaments - Battle at Rum Pointe and Rolling Green Intercollegiate - this season, while playing duals against Towson, George Washington and Howards at Match Play By The Bay, Richmond and Army. Deegan owns the Mids' low stroke average (71.75) heading into the weekend, while Wilkinson and Klock are second at 73.00.
