Track and Field Sweeps the Patriot League Outdoor Championships Again

It is the third consecutive season that the Midshipmen have swept the Outdoor Championship.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Navy track and field team posted a pair of victories at the 2021 Patriot League Outdoor Championships at Shea Stadium in West Point, N.Y. It is the third consecutive season that the Midshipmen have swept the Outdoor Championship.

For the men, it was the eighth outdoor title in program history and the seventh in a row. The victory was the fifth outdoor championship for the women and third consecutive title.

The men trailed by 19 points with two events remaining. The Midshipmen claimed first, third, and fourth in the high jump to earn 21 points and take a two-point advantage heading into the final race. The 4x400m relay team of James Love, Sethan Hollier, Simon Petsch, and Eric Hughey took first in the final event to seal the victory for Navy.

On the women's side, Navy entered the day in first place and continued to add to its advantage, winning by nearly 80 points and notching the most points scored in Patriot League history. The women tallied 295 points, smashing the previous high on the women's side of 237 set by Army in 1994.

"It was an unbelievable day," Jamie Cook, Director of Navy Track and Field said after the meet. "To be honest, we were a big underdog coming into the men's meet. For us to be able to win this meet was amazing. We weren't leading the meet until the very end. It was a dominating performance for the women. We scored a ton of points in a lot of difference places. People stepped up in big ways. I am very excited and so proud of this team. The meet was stacked against us being up at Army. We overcame a lot to be able to win these championships in a year that has been completely stacked against us. It was unbelievable for this team to earn this win. I am so proud of our student-athletes and our coaches. It was a great day for Navy Track and Field."

The Navy men finished with 298 points to win, while Army notched 294 points for second place. Bucknell took third with 70.5, while Lehigh (59) and Holy Cross (53) rounded out the top five. On the women's side, the Midshipmen registered 295 points, followed by Army (216.66) and Bucknell (129.5). Boston (61) and Lehigh (52) rounded out the top five.

Navy won 14 of the 44 combined events over the weekend and tallied 51 total All-Patriot League accolades. In addition, Clayton Thompson was named Men's Track Athlete of the Meet, while also earning Men's Highest Point Scorer. Molly Mangan earned Female Track Athlete of the Meet. Once again, Cook claimed both the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year awards.
