BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Navy women's soccer program was at the forefront of the first edition of the Patriot League's women's soccer weekly awards for the 2021 season. Following the opening weekend of action, a pair of Mids,
Caitlin Doran (Jr., Queens, N.Y.) and
Katie Herrmann (So., Charlotte, N.C.), were recognized as the Patriot League Offensive Player and Midfielder of the Week, respectively. The duo played a large role in Navy going 1-0-1 in action versus Loyola Marymount and George Washington. Additionally, Herrmann was voted on and recognized as the NAAA Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman.
Doran started out her 2021 season with a bang as she put the Mids up for good early in the second half on Thursday versus Loyola Marymount with a steal and goal less than four minutes into the return to action. With the visiting Lions casually passing the ball around its defensive end of the field, Doran tracked the ball and pounced into action when LMU's goalie took a bad first touch and started scrambling. Once in possession of the ball, the junior forward easily deposited the ball into the back of the net to help Navy edge ahead by a score of 2-1 at 48:01. In her second appearance of the week on Sunday against George Washington, Doran played 77 minutes and recorded three shots, two of which were on goal in Navy's 2-2 tie. The Queens, N.Y. native is now a two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week as she garnered the weekly accolade last season on March 30, 2021.
Herrmann, a sophomore midfielder, left her mark throughout the action for Navy in the opening weekend as she registered with points in both games, an assist to
Tatum Kelly in Thursday's victory over Loyola Marymount and a first half goal versus George Washington on Sunday afternoon. She connected with Kelly after chipping a free kick into the box and watching the plebe defender leap up and snap a header shot into the upper-90 past LMU's goalkeeper. In Navy's second game of the 2021 season, Herrmann found her way into the scoring column as she was the recipient of a lofted corner kick by
Sadie McCaleb; in one motion she met the ball and headed it into the goal in the 28th minute of action. Overall, she played 172 of a potential 200 minutes and combined to register three shots with two on goal. This is the first career weekly honor for Herrmann.
Navy will continue its early season action this Thursday night with a short trip to Towson for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt versus the Tigers.
