Mids Play Host to St. John’s in Match Play

After spending last weekend on Long Island playing in the season-opening Doc Gimmler, the Navy men's golf team returns home to play host to St. John's in Match Play By the Bay. Sunday's event is set to begin at 10:00 am with six players from each team competing in singles competition at the Naval Academy Golf Club.

Anchored by the play of senior captain Chad Deegan (Newport Beach, Calif.), the Mids placed sixth amongst 14 teams at The Doc Gimmler. Navy covered the par-70 Red Course at Bethpage State Park with a 54-hole, 16-over par 856 (296-282-278), improving upon their score in each of the three rounds.

Deegan garnered Patriot League Golfer of the Week honors after playing a near-flawless tournament where he posted his third-career top-5 finish. He closed out the two-day competition just a stroke out of the lead with his 3-under par 207 (69-71-67). His 3-under par 67 in the final round was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the fourth hole, while the 67 was the lowest round by a Navy player over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Klock (Sr / Moraga, Calif.) tied for 27th at 6-over (77-69-70=216), followed by Andrew Wilkinson (Fr / Ashland, Va.) who finished 31st in his first-collegiate appearance with a 7-over par 217 (77-71-69). Returning All-Patriot League standout Keegan Shreves (Jr / Potomac, Md.) was a stroke behind Wilkinson in 35th at 218 (75-71-72), while freshman Benjamin Valdez (Fr / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed 52nd in his debut with a 222 (75-74-73). Braxton Tracy (Jr / Huntersville, N.C.) competed as an individual in the tournament, tying for 52nd with his 222 (77-74-71).

St. John's, the host of The Doc Gimmler, finished last weekend's tournament in a tie for fourth alongside Yale with an 11-over par 851. Senior Jack Simon, the individual medalist from last spring's Doc Gimmler, paced the Red Storm with a 2-under par 208 to place third, while junior Ryan Rittberger took 10th with his 1-over par 211.
