ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  Navy men's lacrosse head coach Joe Amplo announced today that senior attackmen Nick Cole (Ashburn, Va.) and Jack Sweeney (Glenelg, Md.) have been selected by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2022 season.

"Being named a team captain is an incredible honor for anyone on any team, however, here at the Naval Academy it takes on an even more prestigious distinction," said Amplo, who is in his third season leading the Midshipmen program. "Our team is filled with exceptional young men with extraordinary leadership potential and ability. To earn the title of captain amongst a group like this is a unique and prestigious achievement. It comes as no surprise that both Nick and Jack have emerged as the captains of our 2022 team. Spending the last two years with them, I have been impressed with their growth, commitment to their teammates and most of all, their willingness to do whatever is asked of them to ensure our team's success. The next year will challenge them even more and I have no doubt they will continue to grow into impactful leaders that will serve our team and ultimately our country well. "

A starter in all 27 games over the last three seasons (13 Fr // 5 So // 9 Jr), Cole enters his senior campaign having produced a point in 25 contests, including each of the final eight from last spring. He was the Mids' fourth-leading scorer a season ago, recording 15 points on six goals and nine assists, while recording multiple points in five contests. Over three seasons, he has turned in 56 points on 34 goals and 22 assists.

Sweeney has also played a pivotal role as a member of the Mids' offensive unit, seeing action in 25 of the 27 games over his first three years, earning starting nods in 13 contests. He has amassed 33 points on 26 goals and 7 assists over his career and is coming off a nine-goal performance last spring. He served as an extra-man sniper for the Mids in 2021, leading the team with six man-up goals which tied as the 11th most in Div. I and the second most in the Patriot League. The six extra-man goals were the most by a Navy player since Harrison Chaires turned in seven in 2011.

Last spring, both Sweeney and Cole helped Navy's extra-man unit convert 13 goals on 30 opportunities (43.3) which ranked 10th nationally and #1 in the Patriot League alongside Boston U.

Meanwhile, looking back to their rookie campaign, the two became Navy's first freshman tandem to score 20 points apiece (Cole 29, Sweeney 23) since Tucker Hull and Sam Jones scored 38 points each in 2011.
