ANNAPOLIS, Md. – It was another busy fall weekend for the Navy intercollegiate sailing team, with a pair of road regattas and one event in Annapolis.
Â
The big regatta of the weekend was the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship Finals, as the top-18 teams in the country converged on the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., after advancing past the first round of competition earlier this month. The wind started out light on Saturday but built throughout the day, as that combined with a noticeable current and very competitive fleet to make the races a challenge for all. Navy started out strong but fell a bit towards the end of the first day, while very light winds allowed for only one race per division on Sunday and left tight standings throughout the field. In the end, Navy finished 12th overall, as senior
Evie Blauvelt, junior
Julia Christie and sophomore
Maggie Schuler posted a very impressive second-place finish in the "A" division while juniors
Aubin Hattendorf and
Madeline Smith were 15th in division "B".
Â
At home, Navy hosted 14 teams in the Truxtun Umsted Regatta. Much like the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship in New York, the conditions in Annapolis were much better for racing on Saturday than on Sunday. After a tight battle amongst a handful of teams, Navy wound up second overall, as senior
Gavin McJones and freshman
Ellie Alex finished seventh in the "A" division while freshman
Nathan Smith and sophomore
Ryan Wahba were first place in the "B" division.
Â
Navy also sailed a pair of teams at the 14-team Washington College Fall Regatta in Chestertown, Md., with the Midshipmen having a great event throughout. The Navy squad saw freshman
Jack Welburn and sophomore
Linnea Forsberg easily win the "A" division while sophomore
Tanner Kelly and junior
Hunter Anderson matched their first-place performance in the "B" division, as the combined score allowed Navy to claim the victory with less than half the points of the second-place team. That runner-up team was another Navy squad, as sophomore
Robert Ziman and freshman
Alex Brenia finished second in the "A" division behind Welburn and Forsberg, while senior
Jonah Hatt made his debut as a skipper alongside freshman crew
Margo Cicero to come in fourth in the "B" division.
Â
The Mids continue the fall slate on Oct. 22-23, as Navy heads to the Co-Ed Atlantic Coast Championships in New London, Conn., and the Yale Women's Regatta in New Haven, Conn.
