Sprint Football Seeks to Claim South Division Title at Alderson Broaddus

Navy plays at Alderson Broaddus with a chance to secure a spot in the 2022 CSFL Championship game.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (5-0, 2-0) travels to Philippi, W.Va. to take on Alderson Broaddus (1-4, 0-1) in a Collegiate Sprint Football League South Division match up on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. With a win, the Midshipmen would secure the CSFL South Division title and secure a spot in the 2022 CSFL Championship game. Since the CSFL moved to divisions in 2017, the Midshipmen have been to the title game three times (2018, '19, '21), winning the conference championship twice (2018, '21).

All-Time Series
Navy holds a 2-0 (1.000) lead in the all-time series against Alderson Broaddus with a win in Annapolis (W, 49-0) and Philippi, W.Va. (W, 65-10).
 
2022 CSFL South Division Standings
Navy sits atop the CSFL South Division standings with one division game remaining. Navy is 2-0 in the division following victories over Chestnut Hill (W, 27-7) and Penn (W, 42-14). Penn, who has wrapped up division play, is 2-1 in the South, defeating Alderson Broaddus (W, 30-7) and Chestnut Hill (W, 9-6), but falling to Navy. Alderson Broaddus is 0-1 in the division with CSFL South games against Navy and Chestnut Hill remaining, while Chestnut Hill is 0-2 in the South with a division game against the Battlers to end the season (Saturday, Nov. 5).
 
Totta, Wyrick Collect Weekly Accolades
Fresh off of a 42-14 victory over divisional foe Penn, Navy sprint football had a pair of student-athletes earn weekly awards. Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.) was named the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman, while Radford Wyrick (Newnan, Ga.) was selected the Collegiate Sprint Football (CSFL) Special Teams Player of the Week.
 
Totta finished the game against the Quakers with 129 all-purpose yards, tallying 110 yards on the ground with 19 yards receiving. The senior offensive team captain concluded the game with three rushing touchdowns – all in the first half, including what proved to be the game-winning score. Totta averaged 5.8 yards per carry with four rushes of 10 yards or more and a reception of 22 yards. He opened the scoring with a three-yard TD run to put Navy in front 7-0. Totta followed that with a 13-yard score to regain the lead, 14-7. His final score was a two-yard plunge to put the Mids in front 21-7, a lead they would not relinquish.
 
Wyrick helped Navy to the Senior Day victory with an impressive special teams performance. The punter tallied four punts on the day, placing three inside of the 20-yardline to help Navy dominate the field-position battle. The senior's one put not inside the 20, trickled into the end zone while Navy was attempting to down the ball at the one-foot line. Radford tallied 148 yards punting on the day for an average of 37.0 with a long of 47.
 
Last Time Out: vs. Penn (Oct. 21, 2022):
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Powered by three touchdowns by senior offensive team captain Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.), Navy posted a 42-14 CSFL South Division game victory over Penn at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. In addition, the Mids' defense picked off a pair of Quaker passes, while also recovering a fumble.
 
Offensively, Navy tallied 325 yards of total offense, notching 213 yards on the ground with 112 yards through the air. Totta led the way on the ground, pounding out 110 rushing yards on 19 carries with three touchdowns. Brandon Atwood (Gentry, Ark.) added 70 yards on the ground with a rushing TD. Victor Otero (Action, Mass.) contributed a rushing score. Atwood led the way passing, finishing the game 12-for-14 for 101 yards and a touchdown. Atwood gave way to Luke Wagner (Edmond, Okla.) who went 1-for-2 for 11 yards. Andrew Margiotta (Vienna, Va.) led the way with three receptions, while Tyron Francis Jr. (Middletown, R.I.) tallied a team-high 45 yards receiving with a touchdown. Totta and Marco Pezzini (Salinas, Calif.) added two receptions apiece, for 19 and 15 yards, respectively.
 
Defensively, the Midshipmen registered 74 total tackles, including 7.0 tackles for loss, and a pair of sacks. The Mids picked off a pair of passes, returning the INTs for 54 total yards. In addition, Navy had three pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, and a fumble recovery. Jack Costigan (Middletown, N.J.) and Paul Kuehler (Roanoke, Va.) finished the game with eight tackles apiece with Kuehler registering a pair of tackles for loss. Lane Condie (Lovelock, Nev.) added seven stops, while recording the team's first interception of the night, returning it 35 yards to set up Navy's first touchdown. Devyn Martin (Las Vegas, Nev.), Major Kent (Dallas, Texas), and Angelo Labbe (Los Angeles, Calif.) notched six tackles apiece with Martin combining for 1.5 TFLs. David Niski (Shelton, Conn.) and Andrew Bailey (Annapolis, Md.) tallied the Mids' two sacks in the game, while Chris Whiteman (Lehighton, Pa.) contributed the Midshipmen's second interception.
 
Sprint Football Tradition
The Navy sprint football team has 38 Collegiate Sprint Football League championships (31 outright) in the program's 76-year history – the most among any school in league history. The team boasts an all-time winning percentage of .835 with an all-time record of 392-74-9, including an 16-1 (.941) mark in CSFL South Division play (divisions started in 2017).
