Intercollegiate Sailing Finishes Up MAISA Championships, Prepares for ICSA Singlehandeds

Navy Sailing Finishes Fourth at the War Memorial, Mids Place Eighth in MAISA Fall Women’s Regatta

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team wrapped up the fall regular season this weekend with two conference championships and a local keelboat event.

The MAISA Fall Women's Championship was at home in Annapolis and featured 11 teams. Saturday featured puffy and shifty northeast winds, and an unfavorable sailing forecast for Sunday led to the organizers choosing to try to finish the event in one day. The shifty winds caused a handful of races to be abandoned, but the sailors were still able to finish races for each division on Saturday. The Midshipmen found themselves on the wrong side of a few shifts and wound up eighth overall, as sophomore Evie Blauvelt and junior Julia Christie finished fourth in the "A" division while senior Elizabeth Linsdell, junior Aubin Hattendorf, sophomores Izzy Fadullon, Linnea Forsberg and Maggie Schuler and freshmen Ava Farley and Ella Niehoff combined to place ninth in the "B" division.

The Mids were also represented at the War Memorial Regatta, which served as the MAISA Fall Open Championship for an 18-team regatta at SUNY Maritime in Bronx, N.Y. The regatta featured light winds and a strong current, with only eight "A" division and six "B" division races completed on Saturday. Sunday saw even less wind, resulting in no races being sailed. Navy wound up tied for third overal, but lost the tiebreaker to Georgetown to place fourth. Senior Gavin McJones and freshman Ellie Alex finished fifth in the "A" division, while freshman Nathan Smith and sophomore Ryan Wahba also earned fifth in Division "B".

A group of Navy sailors also competed in the J-22 East Coast Championship in Annapolis, hosted by the Severn Sailing Association. Despite being new to the boat, the Midshipmen battled and finished second in the final race. That last race served as a high point for the team of sophomore Tanner Kelly, senior Caden Scheiblauer and freshmen Alex Brenia and Jack Welburn, as the crew wound up 17th overall in the 20-boat fleet

Navy returns to the water this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6, at the ICSA Singlehanded Championships in Norfolk, Va.
