PHILADELPHIA - Two thirds of the Navy rowing program were in action on Sunday with 21 entries in the 2022 Princeton Chase. A three-mile head style racing competition at Lake Carnegie, the heavyweight and lightweight teams raced in four separate events with most rowers seeing action twice. The highlight of this busy day of racing was a second-place result by the first varsity eight lightweight crew. The Mids' second varsity heavyweight boat added another top-three effort for Navy on Sunday as it came in third in the second round of the men's eights event.
The action on Sunday began with the heavyweight eights race. Entering six crews in the field of 41, Navy went up against numerous squads that it will go head-to-head with in the spring. At the conclusion of the three-mile race, the Mids' first varsity clocked in with a time of 13:54.896, good for 11th place. Navy's third crew was right behind in 12th at 13:57.341.
The lightweights took center stage next in the lightweight eights contest. Similar to their heavyweight brethren, the majority of the teams that Navy raced against on Sunday were regular season rivals from the east coast. Taking on a field of 17 boats, the Mids' first varsity challenged the host Princeton Tigers for the event title before coming in second place. Princeton finished the race at 13:31.673 ahead of Navy's 13:39.270. The Mids' second varsity gave the program two boats in the top-10 as it posted a time of 14:11.414 to rank tenth overall.
The afternoon of second chance action saw seven Navy crews racing in the men's eights: round two event. All six of the heavyweight boats raced in this contest and made the most of this second opportunity. The heavyweights' B and C boats had the best results as the B crew finished third in the field with a 13:38.821 time, just 3.511 seconds behind Wisconsin's B crew. Navy's C crew completed the course with the fifth-fastest time at 13:50.487.
The final event that had navy and gold oars in the water was the men's four competition. A second chance for three lightweight four-man crews, the Navy A boat led the way as it clocked in 11th with a time of 15:04.356. That time barely missed breaking into the top-10 as La Salle's A crew finished at 15:04.020. Overall, 32 boats were entered in the men's four event.
Sunday marked the final fall race for the heavyweight program, while the lightweights will wrap up their non-championship season next Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. at the UVA Fall Classic.
