Women’s Golf to Open Spring Season at the San Jose Intercollegiate

The Navy women’s golf team is slated to open its 2022 spring season Monday as it travels to take part in the San Jose Intercollegiate hosted at the San Jose Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's golf team (0-0) is slated to open its 2022 spring season Monday as it travels to take part in the San Jose Intercollegiate hosted at the San Jose Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. Competition is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on both Monday and Tuesday.
 
All three rounds of the tournament will be streamed via Jacksonville's GameKast platform along with free, live statistics being available on NavySports.com. The first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament will be played on Monday followed by the final 18 on Tuesday. 
 
FALL RECAP
During its fall portion of the 2021-22 season, Navy found great success including coming away as team champions at the Bucknell Invitational for the second time in three seasons. The top three-round score of the fall for the Mids came at the Navy Invitational, where they took advantage of their home-course advantage to earn a third-place finish with a 33-over par 609. In all, Navy finished the fall with top-10 finishes in each of its five tournaments that included three top-five finishes.
 
The top-individual performer of the fall for the Mids was Mara Hirtle (So., Pinehurst, N.C.) who totaled a team-best average scored of 75.25. The lowest score of the fall tournament circuit for Hirtle came during the second round of the William & Mary Invitational at an even 72. Angelina Chan (Jr., Franklin, Tenn.) and Tori Smith (Sr., Arlington, Tenn.) tied for the lowest-single round score of the fall by each recording a 1-under par 69 at the Bucknell Invitational in the first and second round, respectively.
 
Rounding out the top performers of the fall for the Midshipmen was the duo of Stephanie Lee (So., Southlake, Texas) and Eve Worden (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.). Lee, playing in 12 rounds this fall, averaged 76.5 strokes per round along with posting two top-10 individual finishes. Worden played in nine rounds and averaged a score of 76.9 per round, the fourth-best mark on the team.

THE FIELD
Joining Navy and host Jacksonville among the field of 17 teams for the San Jose Intercollegiate is Butler, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Dixie State, Florida International, Georgetown, Houston Baptist, Lipscomb, Seminole State, Tennessee Tech, Towson, North Carolina-Greensboro and South Carolina-Upstate.
 
THE COURSE
The Donald Ross designed San Jose Country Club is a par-72 course that plays at 7,043 yards. The course, which has undergone a recent renovation in 2020, was originally designed in 1925 with the aforementioned restoration project focusing on restoring the original vision of Ross.
 
UP NEXT
Following its participation in the San Jose Intercollegiate, Navy will return to action March 19-20 as it takes part in the Low Country Intercollegiate. The tournament will be hosted at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
