ATLANTA, Ga. –– Navy swimmer
Sydney Harrington (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) and diver
Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.) competed in their final events at the NCAA Championship Saturday in Atlanta, Ga.
Harrington posted a time of 1:55.49 to finish in 23rd place in the 200 butterfly. A three-time NCAA Championship qualifier (2020, '21, '22), Harrington joins Lauren Barber as the only Navy and Patriot League women's swimmers to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades on the Division I level in an event. She placed 16th in the 200 fly at the 2021 championship to earn the laurel.
Montau scored 225.25 points to place 40th in Saturday's platform diving event. The only Navy and Patriot League women's diver to qualify for the NCAA Championship on the Division I level in each of her four years, Montau competed in all three diving events at the national championship for the second year in a row. She qualified for 10 events at the meet over the course of her four seasons.
"I couldn't be happier with my career and everything I have accomplished since I began diving 11 years ago," said Montau. "I wouldn't have been able to get through it without the help of and support of my teammates past and present. I am super honored and proud to have represented Navy swimming and diving these past four years. I will cherish all of the memories and laughs with the best people by my side. This chapter may have ended, but I'm excited to see what's in store for the next."
"It was great for Hannah to end the meet on such a positive note today," said Navy diving coach
Rich MacDonald. "She had a good meet. I am so proud of her accomplishments over her four years. She put in the effort on a daily basis and will go down as one of Navy's most accomplished female divers."
Finishing her career on Friday was
Martina Thomas (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark.), who is the only Navy and Patriot League women's swimmer to qualify for four NCAA Division I Championship meets.
"The past four years of swimming at Navy has molded me into who I am today," said Thomas, "and has taught me lessons I will carry for the rest of my life. Qualifying for four NCAA Championships in a row and being able to represent Navy and my teammates has meant the world to me. I am so grateful for (head coach)
John Morrison, (associate head coach) Rob Lias and my NWSD family!"
"We are so incredibly proud of these three women," said Morrison. "Each had an amazing career and have raised the bar for our program. It is appropriate that they finished their careers at the most competitive NCAA Championship in history. They represented their team incredibly well throughout the meet and competed until the end. We are sad to see them go, but are forever proud of their contributions to our program and their future contributions to our country."
