ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Coming off of a banner 2021 season that ended with the program atop the podium at the IRA National Championship, the Navy lightweight rowing team will begin its 2022 campaign on Saturday morning with a four-race slate at home against Princeton. The competition on the Severn River starts with the second varsity eights racing at 7:40 a.m. before the Murtaugh Cup will be on the line for the the Mids and Tigers' first varsity eight crews at 8:00 a.m.
The entire race schedule for Saturday will consist of the second varsity eight crews heading down the 2,000-meter course on the Severn River at 7:40 a.m. followed 20 minutes later by the Murtaugh Cup competition. The final two races will see the third varsity eights going head-to-head at 8:20 a.m. with the fourth varsity eights in action at 8:40 a.m. Navy's fifth and sixth varsity eights will also be competing in the 4V race.
The teams will be racing on the lower course on Saturday. The finish line is best seen from the fields on Hospital Point. Spectators are asked to refrain from entering Hubbard Hall before, during or following the action.

Navy will be led by a deep 13-man senior class.

Going head-to-head with Princeton at Lake Carnegie, the Mids had to deal with difficult wind and water conditions on the 2,000-meter course. The day began with Navy winning the third and fourth varsity contests before Princeton closed with victories in the first and second varsity races. With the win in the first varsity eight race, the host Tigers retained possession of the Murtaugh Cup.
Murtaugh Cup History
Named after the former Princeton and U.S. lightweight rowing coach Joseph Murtaugh, the trophy has been on the line between the Mids and Tigers since 2008. After Navy won the initial competition in 2008, Princeton countered with eight straight victories in the first varsity eight race until the Mids climbed back on top in 2017. All-time, Princeton leads the Murtaugh Cup series, 10-2.

Directions to Navy Boathouse and viewing on Navy's Lower Course
*you will need a photo ID to walk onto Navy campus*
These driving directions will take you to Gate 8 of the Naval Academy. Spectators and guests should park outside of the gate and make the short walk (0.25 miles) to the boathouse. Once at the boathouse, it is another short walk (0.33 miles) to the finish line of the Lower Course.
• Route 50 towards Annapolis
• Take Exit 24, Rowe Blvd, Annapolis
• After approx 1 mile, make a left onto Taylor Ave.
• After passing a 7-Eleven, make a right at the T-intersection.
• Turn right at the second traffic light and then make another immediate right into a parking area and park there. To get to the boathouse, you need to walk down the hill along the practice baseball field and to the guard shack. Show your photo ID to the guard and continue to walk down the hill. The boathouse is the first building that you will see on the right after the guard shack.
• From the boathouse, you can walk to the finish line of the Lower Course. After crossing the road near the boathouse towards the cemetery, take the road that takes you along the water's edge in the creek (Do not cross over bridge). Once you get to the hospital point fields, walk across field to the right corner of the seawall. The finish line is directly at that corner.
