Women’s Lacrosse Hosts Johns Hopkins in Top 25 Showdown

Opening draw between the Mids and the Blue Jays is slated for 4:00 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 25 Navy women's lacrosse team (5-1) welcomes No. 16 Johns Hopkins (4-1) to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. for a top-25 nonconference match up. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
 
Scouting the Midshipmen
No. 25 Navy enters the week 5-1 on the season. The Midshipmen return to action after hitting the road last Tuesday for a road contest against No. 15 Drexel. The Mids return home after posting a 13-6 upset victory over the nationally-ranked Dragons.
 
Offensively, Navy has tallied 117 points on 83 goals and 34 assists in six games this season. The Mids have had a balanced attack so far this season. Of the 14 players who have netted goals, seven have been upperclassmen (juniors/seniors) and seven have been underclassmen (freshmen/sophomores). The upperclassmen have accounted for 53.8-percent of the points scored, while the underclassmen have registered 51.8-percent of the goals scored
 
The Mids are led by Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.), Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.), Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.), Lola Leone (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.), Gil Eby (Towson, Md.), and Lindsay Beardmore (Annapolis, Md.). Denton paces the offense with a team-high 17 points on a team-best 13 goals. The sophomore has four hat tricks in six games on the year. Roelofs and Dietzel are tied for second on the team with 15 points apiece. Roelofs boasts 10 goals and five assists, while Dietzel has six goals and a team-high nine helpers. Following her first collegiate hat trick, Leone is fourth on the team with 13 points (10g 3a), while Ryan (12g 0a) and Eby (8g 4a) are tied with 12 points apiece. Beardmore rounds out Navy's double-figure scorers with 10 points on seven goals and three assists.
 
Dietzel leads the team with 26 draw controls, while Roelofs is second with 25 and Emily Messinese (Manchester, Md.) has won 12 draws.
 
Defensively, the Mids picked up 119 ground balls, caused 44 turnovers, and tallied 55 saves.
 
Christine Fiore (Darian, Conn.) has grabbed a team-high 13 ground balls, while Dietzel and Grace Loughery (Perkasie, Pa.) have added 11 apiece. Erin Carson (New Albany, Ohio) leads the team with six caused turnovers, while Fiore and Alexis Bell (Johns Creek, Ga.) have added five apiece.
 
Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) leads the team with 53 of Navy's 55 saves in 346:43 minutes of action. Torres has earned five victories with a 53.0 save percentage. She is joined by Emma Richardell (Bethesda, Md.) and Anne Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) who have combined for two stops in 13 minutes of action.
 
Scouting the Opponent
No. 16 Johns Hopkins enters the week 4-1 with victories over VCU (W, 15-6), #10 Penn (W, 10-8), Georgetown (W, 16-10), and #15 Drexel (W, 11-6). The only blemish on the Blue Jays' record came against Patriot League opponent #9 Loyola (L, 14-5).
 
In five games, Hopkins has amassed 75 points on 57 goals and 18 assists. The Blue Jays have won 60 draw controls with 78 ground balls and 53 caused turnovers. Johns Hopkins' goalies have combined for 36 saves in five games with 44 goals allowed with a 45.0 save percentage and a 8.80 goals against average.
 
Johns Hopkins is led by Shelby Harrion who paces the offensive attack with 11 goals, while Georgia Esmond leads the team with 18 points with seven goals and a team-best 11 assists. Kathleen Garvey has started all five games at goal. The graduate student has recorded all 36 saves for JHU, while surrendering 43 goals for an 8.64 goals against average.
 
All-Time Series
The game marks the second meeting between the two teams in women's lacrosse. Navy is 1-0 in the series, winning the inaugural meeting 16-9 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Baltimore in 2018.
 
Head coach Cindy Timchal is 9-0 all time against the Blue Jays.
 
Johns Hopkins Director of Athletics Jennifer S. Baker ('98) graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a degree in aerospace engineering and was a member of the Academy's women's lacrosse club team, leading the club lacrosse team to a national championship.
 
National Rankings
The Navy women's lacrosse team entered the ILWomen / IWLCA Division I Poll this week, coming in at No. 25. It is the first time this season that the Midshipmen have been nationally ranked. Johns Hopkins enters the game ranked 16th according to the ILWomen / IWLCA Poll.
 
Prior to entering this week's rankings, the Mids had been ranked 64 total weeks in program history, including a streak of 47 consecutive weeks from the final poll of the 2017 season (May 30, 2017) to April 12, 2021.
 
Roelofs, Torres Claim Patriot League Weekly Honors
The Patriot League official announced its weekly award winners and Navy's Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) were named Attacker and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively. The duo helped lead Navy to a 13-6 upset road victory over No. 15 Drexel.
 
Roelofs paced the Navy offensive attack with a team-best five points on a team-high four goals, while adding an assist. It was the senior's first hat trick of the season. In addition, the offensive captain added six of Navy's nine draw controls with two ground balls and a team-high two caused turnovers.
 
Torres played a full 60-minutes in the cage for the Midshipmen, registering 13 saves with two ground balls. She anchored a Navy defense that held the potent Drexel offense, which averaged 15.3 goals per game heading into the contest, to just six goals. It was the third double-digit save performance of the season for the sophomore and the fifth of her career.
 
Last Time Out: Navy 13, #15 Drexel 6 (March 1, 2022)
Navy posted a 13-6 victory against No. 15 Drexel at Vidas Field in Philadelphia, Pa. It was the first victory over a ranked opponent since the Mids defeated No. 16 Duke (W, 16-15) in 2020, while it was the highest ranked opponent Navy has beaten since the Mids' win over No. 11 Florida (W, 14-13) in 2019.
 
Navy was firing on all cylinders during the game against Drexel. The Mids tallied 13 goals and five assists for 18 total points in the game, while winning nine draw controls, picking up 23 ground balls, and causing eight turnovers. In addition, the Midshipmen recorded 12 saves.
 
Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the team with five points on a team-high four goals and an assist. She was joined by Lola Leone (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.) who each registered hat tricks with three goals apiece. Lindsay Beardmore (Annapolis, Md.) chipped in a pair of scores, while Gil Eby (Towson, Md.) also found the back of the net once.
 
Roelofs won six of Navy's nine draw controls in the game, while Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.) added two and Eby won one. Christine Fiore (Darien, Conn.) picked up a team-high four ground balls, while Alexis Bell (Johns Creek, Ga.), Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.), and Dietzel added three ground balls each. Seven different Mids recorded caused turnovers, led by Roelofs who finished with a pair.
 
At goal, Torres finished the game with 12 saves. It was the third double-digit save performance of the season for the sophomore and the fifth of her career.
