Montau Qualifies for Fourth NCAA Diving Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.) placed fifth in the platform diving event at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship Wednesday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis to qualify for the fourth NCAA Championship of her career.

She is the first Navy and Patriot League women's diver to qualify for four NCAA Championship meets on the Division I level.

Montau scored 486.95 points to finish in fifth place in today's competition.  The top-five divers in the event at the zone meet earned berths to the NCAA Championship, which will be held March 17-19 in Atlanta, Ga.

"Hannah was nothing short of spectacular today," said Navy diving coach Rich MacDonald, "and she needed to be.  The competition was intense, to say the least.  I am so proud of how she kept her focus and composure.  She dove well all week, but each day we knew she could have done a little bit better and that kept her on the outside looking in for qualifying heading into the last day.  To be able to put it all together the way she did today was amazing."

Montau also will compete in the one and three-meter events at the national championship, thanks to her placings in the springboard events earlier this week.  She scored 539.05 points to place 10th in the one-meter event and totaled 565.80 points to finish in 12th place in the three-meter competition.  Montau needed to finish among the top-12 divers on those boards to be able to compete in them at the championship in addition to her qualifying platform event.

Additional Mids to compete at the zone meet were Caroline Turner (Sr., Phoenixville, Pa.), George Moore (So., New Canaan, Conn.), Zack Peng (Fr., Oakton, Va.) and Blakeman Shaw (Fr., Coral Gables, Fla.).

"The men did well this week," said MacDonald.  "The level of competition at the meet was the strongest I have seen at our zone meet.  They are a young group, so this experience will be beneficial for their future.

"I am so happy for Caroline to end her career on such a great note.  She was very consistent and strong this week, just as she has been over the last four years."
