Intercollegiate Sailing Promotes Dillon Paiva to Associate Head Coach

Paiva Set to Begin his Eighth Season on the Navy Coaching Staff

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy intercollegiate sailing head coach Ian Burman announced Friday the elevation of Dillon Paiva to the title of associate head coach.

Paiva has served the last seven seasons as an assistant coach under Burman, helping the Midshipmen sailing program reach even higher levels of success.

"I am very honored to receive this promotion to associate head coach, and to continue to leave my mark on an already historic sailing program," said Paiva. "Going into my eighth season here at Navy, I am excited to continue doing what makes this job so great, which is working with the young men and women on our team."

During Paiva's time with the Mids, the program has totaled five conference championships and 30 All-America honors, including 10 sailors becoming multiple-time All-Americans.

Highlighting his tenure as an assistant coach was the undefeated 2020-21 season, as Paiva was instrumental in directing Navy to a pair of national championships in June 2021, capturing the Henry A. Morss Trophy (ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship) and the Walter C. Wood Trophy (ICSA Team Racing National Championship).

Individually in 2020-21, Paiva oversaw eight All-American Midshipmen. Under the tutelage of Burman and Paiva, JC Hermus became the first Mid since 1995 to take home the Everett B. Morris Trophy, given to the ICSA College Sailor of the Year. Hermus was then named the 2022 recipient of the NAAA Sword for Men award following his time with the Navy sailing program, capping off a career that saw him receive Coed All-America Skipper distinction four times.

The most recent campaign, 2021-22, saw Paiva help the program place amongst the top-10 teams in each of the three spring ICSA National Championships after a second-place finish in the fall's ICSA Match Race Championship. Additionally, the Mids posted their the third-straight campaign with at least five All-America honorees.

A Raleigh, N.C. native, Paiva graduated from Old Dominion in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in education, and was a standout sailor for the Monarchs. Named the 2013 ICSA Robert H. Hobbs Sportsman of the Year, Paiva also earned a spot on the 2012 U.S. Sailing Olympic Development Team and qualified for the ICSA Coed Dinghy Nationals every year at Old Dominion.
