Class of 1973 Heinz Lenz Fellowship

The USNA Class of 1973 has created aĀ fellowship in honor of the late Coach Heinz LenzĀ as part of their class project. This fellowship will give a two-year appointment to a non-revenue sport coach. The appointed coach epitomizesĀ Coach Lenz' leadership qualities and attributes.Ā Class President, Dirk Mosis said "by honoring and giving an award in his name then we could award non-revenue coaches for their performance and their impact on midshipmen."

In 2020 Navy Athletics named Gavin HickieĀ as the inauguralĀ Heinz Lenz fellow. Hickie says the fellowship was huge for the program. He expanded on this by saying "To get that broader acknowledgment, you know not even for our current players and staff but for everybody that's gone before us... we are reaching the crescendo at our club level and the HeinzĀ Lenz association is just the icing on the cake". In 2022, Navy Athletics named aĀ new fellow, former gold medalist and current Women's Soccer Head Coach Carin Gabarra.Ā " Coach Heinz Lenz was a legend here at the Academy, his legacy here at the Naval Academy will always be his passion for the mission and coaches Rob Blanck, Mike Melton, and myself hope to add this to our program and we hope to follow in his footsteps." said Gabarra.Ā

Class projects like this raise funds to support an initiative of their choosing. The Class of 1973 Heinz Lenz Fellow, lead by Dirk Mosis and Class Fundraiser, George Watt, has received great support from class alumni, providing Margin of Excellence support to Navy Athletics programs.Ā
