Dominic Powell, a proud Maryland native and current Athletic Excellence donor, has made a significant and lasting impact on the midshipman experience through his generous contributions and involvement in the Sponsor Program.
Growing up, Powell was deeply inspired by the Naval Academy and the Midshipmen. Drawn to military service from an early age, he participated in his high school's drill team, rifle team, color guard, and other military-focused extracurriculars. By his senior year, Powell had committed to joining the United States Marine Corps. However, he paused his military career to pursue advanced civilian work.
Still driven by a strong desire to serve, and after numerous conversations with USNA alumni, Powell made the decision to reenlist - this time with the U.S. Navy Reserves in 2024. He currently serves as a Master-at-Arms with Navy Security Forces assigned to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Annapolis. Powell graduated from Boot Camp in January and completed A-School in March of this year.
Before rejoining the Navy, Powell had the opportunity to participate in the Midshipman Sponsor Program. As a sponsor, he welcomed two midshipmen into his life, offering mentorship, hospitality, and a home away from home. This role gave him a unique, firsthand perspective into the mental, physical, and emotional demands of Academy life. The personal stories and experiences shared by the midshipmen deepened his appreciation for the Academy's mission and values.
Inspired by this newfound understanding, and driven by his ongoing passion for service, Powell chose to support the Athletic Excellence Fund. He believes that acts of service create a ripple effect, shaping lives in ways that may never be fully visible. For Powell, small acts of generosity, especially toward those who serve, help strengthen the common bond that unites us all.
As a donor, Powell sees his contributions as a natural extension of his commitment to service. Supporting the Naval Academy not only enriches the lives of midshipmen but also gives him the opportunity to remain engaged in both their personal and professional development. His passion, experience, and generosity exemplify the kind of individual whose impact extends well beyond those he sponsors, benefiting all Midshipmen who gain from the Athletic Excellence Fund.
