Mike '90 and Melissa Maier are loyal and generous supporters of the Physical Mission at the United States Naval Academy. Raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Mike initially aspired to attend the Coast Guard Academy. That changed after he learned more about the academic and athletic excellence of the Naval Academy and witnessed the success of a neighbor from the Class of 1984. That influence, combined with being heavily recruited to play football, ultimately led him to commit to Navy.
Before Plebe Summer, Mike spent a year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) - an experience he describes as transformational. NAPS allowed him to grow mentally and physically while building a strong network of classmates. Mike often calls it "one of the best-kept secrets in the Navy," noting that the program prepared him for the rigors of the Academy and gave him a meaningful advantage: "Coming into the Academy already knowing nearly 25 percent of my class was incredibly valuable."
Upon graduating from NAPS, Mike earned his place at the Naval Academy and on the Navy football team. His time as a student-athlete was rewarding and enjoyable, while also demanding. Balancing football, academics, and military obligations required significant commitment, time management, and sacrifice.
After graduation, Mike served seven years as a Surface Warfare Officer. Following a stint coaching football at NAPS and completing various surface warfare schools, his seagoing career began aboard USS Lake Champlain (CG-57), homeported in San Diego. He later served as Officer-in-Charge of the Aegis Training and Support Group in Philadelphia, where his team focused on engineering support and training for the Arleigh Burke class destroyer. After his naval service, Mike built a successful career in financial services before retiring in 2024.
As a proud member of the Class of 1990, Mike remains closely connected to his classmates. Living in the Annapolis area allows him to regularly attend sporting events including Navy football, basketball, and lacrosse games - many of which double as informal reunions. He also stays engaged with former teammates through active involvement in the Navy Football Brotherhood.
Mike currently serves as a Trustee of the Naval Academy Athletic Foundation, a role that allows him to continue giving back to the institution that shaped his life. "I wouldn't be where I am today without the Academy," he says, "so I felt an obligation to pay it forward." Serving as a Trustee keeps him deeply involved with the Academy and its mission.
Mike is particularly passionate about providing the margin of excellence required for the Naval Academy's Physical Mission. Representing one of the Naval Academy's three core missions, it is primarily executed through intramural, club, and varsity athletics. This allows every member of the Brigade to experience athletic competition which teaches leadership and skills critical to success in life and on the battlefield. Mike gives knowing his generosity supports that margin of excellence, enabling midshipmen to fully develop into the best leaders possible.
