Rifle Returns to Action on Saturday Against Akron and Ole Miss

The Navy rifle team is set to open the 2023 portion of its schedule Saturday at 9:00 a.m. as it welcomes Akron and Ole Miss to the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy rifle team (8-4, 2-2 in the GARC) is set to open the 2023 portion of its schedule Saturday as it welcomes Akron (7-4, 4-1 in the GARC) and Ole Miss (4-2, 2-2 in the GARC) to the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. Saturday's match is set to get underway at 9:00 a.m. and free, live results of the competition will be available via NavySports.com.
 
ACCESSING THE USNA
The USNA is closed to all vehicles without a Department of Defense-approved identification card. All other visitors are encouraged to park downtown and walk through the security gates at Gate One. When walking on, those ages 18 and over must present a photo identification card (driver's license) to gain access and those 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
 
LAST TIME OUT
In its final intercollegiate match of the 2022 portion of its schedule, Navy split a pair of matches in Ohio. The Midshipmen started the weekend at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range in Akron, Ohio, dropping a four-point decision (4,688-4,684) to host Akron. The Mids rebounded with their second-best score of the season to defeat Ohio State, 4,706-4,682, at the Hugh W. Wylie Range in Columbus, Ohio. Against the Buckeyes, Navy topped the 4,700-point plateau for the third time in the last four matches.
 
FALL RECAP
Prior to the semester break, the Midshipmen posted eight wins including two victories in GARC matches, highlighted by a season-high 4,714 points at The Citadel on Nov. 13.
 
Marleigh Duncan (Wake Forest, N.C.) was the top performer for Navy in the fall, leading the Mids in average scoring for aggregate (1,178.3) while ranking second in smallbore (586.0) and air rifle scoring (592.3). Parker Haydin (Joshua, Texas) finished the fall as the Mids' top performer in the smallbore discipline (586.1), while finishing second in aggregate (1,177.9) and third in air rifle (591.8). Clarissa Layland (Granbury, Texas) was the top performer in the fall in air rifle (592.9), while coming in third on the team in the aggregate scoring (1,166.4).
 
In smallbore, Stephanie Milvain (Matthews, N.C.), Joshua Potts (Ephrata, Pa.), and Layland round out the top five fall performers. Milvain posted an average score of 579.4 in the discipline, while Potts and Layland notched a 576.1 and 573.5 average, respectively. Potts and Deonte Hayes (Fort Mill, S.C.) close out the top 5 in air rifle. Potts registered an average score of 585.5 in air rifle, finishing just ahead of Hayes' 584.9 scoring average. Rounding out the aggregate top-5 scoring were Milvain and Potts. The duo each posted aggregate results of over 1,160 with Milvain averaging 1,164.0 and Potts notching a 1,161.6.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Akron:
The Zips enter the weekend with a 7-4 overall record. Akron and Navy met earlier this season with the Zips edging the Midshipmen by four points (4,688-4,684) on Nov. 19. Akron is led by Andrew Duross who has posted the team's best average in both aggregate (1,174.8) and smallbore (583.8), while coming in second on the squad in air rifle (591.0). Lex Kirk, who has notched the best team average across the board through the last three matches, paces the Zips in air rifle (591.7). Gavin Perkowski is second on the team in aggregate (1,172.9) and smallbore (582.7), while rounding out Akron's top 3 in air rifle (590.2).
 
Ole Miss: The Rebels come to Annapolis with a 4-2 overall mark. Ole Miss is led by Lea Horvath. The junior has a team-best average of 1,184.2 in aggregate scoring, while boasting a 587.2 in smallbore and 597.0 in air rifle. Kristen Derting is tied with Horvath with a team lead in smallbore (587.2), while coming in second on the squad in air rifle (596.2) and aggregate (1,183.6). Julianna Hays and Emma Pereira are tied for second in the smallbore with averages of 586.0, while Martina Gratz is third for the Rebels in air rifle (591.0). Hays rounds out Ole Miss' top three scorers with an aggregate average of 1,176.4.
 
UP NEXT
Following its contest against Akron and Ole Miss, Navy is set to return to action Saturday, Jan. 28 as it travels to Morgantown, W.Va. to take on West Virginia. The match is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
