Women’s Tennis Readies to Close Out Fall at the Academy Challenge

Navy to Face Competitors from Air Force, Army and Georgetown

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team is set to close out the fall season against a trio of familiar teams this weekend in Arlington, Va., as the Midshipmen are taking part in the Academy Challenge on Oct. 27-29 at the Army Navy Country Club.
 
Facing individual competition from fellow service academies Army and Air Force as well as regional foe Georgetown, Navy will compete in singles and doubles play against the Falcons at 4 p.m. Friday before taking on the Black Knights at 11 a.m. Saturday and the Hoyas at 3 p.m. Sunday.
 
Last Time Out
Highlighted by junior Emily Tannenbaum becoming the first player in program history to reach the Round-of-16 in singles play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional Championship, a program-record seven Midshipmen competed in ITA singles action on the weekend … Navy also had another program high with three doubles team entered in the main draw, as senior Samantha Johns and sophomore Sia Chaudry partnered to reach the round-of-32 … Chaudry, Johns and junior Sylvia Eklund all won their opening qualifying matches in singles action, while Stella Ribaudo overcame an opening-round loss to record a pair of consolation victories.
 
Scouting the Competition
Navy faced off with all three opponents in dual-match action last spring, with the Mids also squaring off against Georgetown players in tournament competition earlier this fall … The Mids went 1-1 against rival Army last season, claiming a 4-3 win in the Star Match on April 1 before falling, 4-2, in the Patriot League Semifinals less than a month later on April 29 … In the first all-time meeting between the programs, Navy earned a 4-2 victory over Air Force at the USTA College MatchDay event on Feb. 18 … Navy captured a 6-1 win over the Hoyas on April 7 … In tournament action this fall, Navy has gone 2-1 against Georgetown players in singles play and 1-2 against doubles teams from the Hoyas.
 
Navy Leaders
Tannenbaum paces the Mids with 13 singles victories, while Chaudry ranks second on the team at 10 singles wins … Freshman Anna Jordaan is on a four-match singles winning streak entering the weekend … A pair of doubles teams sit at a team-best 6-1 record, as freshmen Makaila Cheng and Olivia Fermo had won six straight before losing their most recent match together, while Eklund and Jordaan have won their last three matches as a pairing.

Navy begins the spring season on Saturday, Jan. 20 with a doubleheader against Saint Francis and St. Bonaventure at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
