Navy Duo Named ACWPC All-Americans

Freshman Kiefer Black and senior Caden Capobianco were named ACWPC Honorable Mention All-Americans.

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) announced the 2023 Men's Division I All-America teams and Navy attacker Kiefer Black and goalkeeper Caden Capobianco were named as honorable mention selections. For Capobianco, it is the second All-American accolade in his career, while Black becomes the first Navy freshman to be named All-America since Kyle Wertz ('12) earned the first of his two All-American honors in 2008.

Earlier in the year, Black and Capobianco were each named to the First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC), while also being tabbed First Team MAWPC All-Tournament Team.

This season, Black, who was the MAWPC Rookie of the Year, played in 26 of 27 games, leading the team with 125 total points on a team-high 68 goals and a team-best 57 assists. The San Diego native became the 12th player in school history with a 100-point season and the first since Isaac Salinas ('22) finished with 104 points in 2019. Black finished with the third-most points in a single season (125) behind Doug Munz ('95) who had 184 in 1994 and Paul Pedrotty ('13) who had 137 in 2012 – tops among Navy freshmen. He registered 19 multiple goal games, including 11 hat tricks, scoring a season-best nine goals against George Washington, which tied for most goals in a game in program history. Defensively, Black finished with 33 steals, which was the most among Navy position players, while adding 24 ejections drawn.

In goal, Capobianco, who was selected team captain prior to the season, was named to the Peter J. Cutino Award Watch List, which recognizes the best player in men's and women's college water polo. He played in 23 games, recording 237 saves with 187 goals allowed for a 55.9 save percentage. The Laguna Beach, Calif. native registered 16 double-digit save performances, including six against ranked opponents and 11 against conference foes. Capobianco notched a season-best 16 saves against Mount St. Mary's, while adding 14 stops versus Bucknell.
