Wrestling Looks to Extend Winning Streak Sunday Against Ohio

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 17th-ranked Navy wrestling team (4-0) resumes its dual schedule with a neutral site contest against Ohio (2-0) this Sunday at 2 p.m.

The dual will be held at the Jefferson Morgan High School Gymnasium in Jefferson, Pa.

Navy Team Notes
• The Mids own a 4-0 record this season and have won six-straight duals dating back to the 2022-23 campaign
• Navy has defeated two power-five institutions this season (Illinois, Pitt). The Mids hadn't beaten two power five teams in the same year since the 2019-2020 season when they claimed wins against Maryland (21-12) and Duke (39-6)
• Navy is off to its first 4-0 start since the 2017-18 campaign and is on its longest winning streak since it opened the 2016-17 season with six-consecutive victories
• The Mids began the season with a win at then No. 23 Illinois (23-18) and then swept the Navy Quad Meet. Navy shut out Morgan State, 39-0, and then routed VMI, 40-6. The Mids won 19 of the 20 bouts in the two duals and claimed bonus points in nine
• The highlight win for Navy came in the final matchup against then No. 16 Pitt. The Mids won six bouts, four of which were against ranked wrestlers to win the contest, 21-12
• Navy has won 30 of the 40 bouts in duals this season and has earned bonus points in 13
• The Mids have outscored their four opponents, 123-36, this season
• Head coach Cary Kolat will look to win his 60th match as a head coach on Sunday. He owns a 59-52 career record and a 20-12 record in Annapolis
• Sunday's match will be held at coach Kolat's high school, where he won four-straight state titles and compiled a perfect 137-0 record. He was named Outstanding Wrestler at the state meet each year, an honor no other wrestler had won even twice
• Navy has been ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I Top 25 Poll for four-consecutive weeks
• The Mids earned a national ranking for the first time since Feb. 23, 2021, when they were tabbed 19th on Nov. 14
• Navy has been ranked 17th for three-straight weeks and is currently the second-best ranked program in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA)
• The Mids competed in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last weekend and placed 16th out of 35 teams
• Navy recorded the second-best team placement of the eight teams from the EIWA at the prestigious event
Danny Wask (174) and Grady Griess (285) placed fourth and fifth in their respective weight classes
• Navy was one of 18 teams who had at least two wrestlers place
• Two or more mids have placed at the CKLV Invitational in all three appearances under coach Kolat

• Wask made a big jump in the latest InterMat individual rankings, being elevated from No. 30 to No. 20
• Also earning a ranking was No. 22 Brendan Ferretti (133), No. 18 Josh Koderhandt (141), No. 27 Andrew Cerniglia (165), No. 19 David Key (184) and No. 13 Griess
• Griess leads the Mids in wins (11) and victories over ranked opponents (four) this season. He is also tied with Key for the most wins by fall with three
• Wask is tied with Nicholas Vafiadis (149) and Sammy Starr (174) for the second-most wins on the team with 10
• Griess passed Koderhandt at the CKLV Invitational for the most career victories on Navy's roster with 62
• Koderhandt claimed his 60th win as a mid by fall (3:33) against Ivan Garcia of Binghamton at the CKLV Invitational
• Koderhandt leads the Mids in career dual wins with 19. The Belleville, Ill., native has won eight-straight dual matches dating back to last season
• Key has garnered bonus points in all three dual wins this season. He defeated both No. 22 Dylan Connell (3:27) of Illinois and No. 13 Reece Heller (2:47) of Pitt by fall and VMI's River Carroll by technical fall (18-2 / 5:24). Only two of Key's eight wins have been by decision this season
• Ferretti, Koderhandt and Key are tied as the team leader in dual wins this season with three
• Cerniglia looks to return to the mat on Sunday after missing time due to an injury he suffered at the Navy Quad Meet. The senior has won 16 of his 20 dual matches in his career and owns the best winning percentage in duals on Navy's roster (80.0)
• The first EIWA rankings were released on Nov. 28 and nine mids were ranked in their respective weight class - Evan Tallmadge (7th); Ferretti (5th); Koderhandt (4th); Vafiadis (6th); Cerniglia (5th); Wask (3rd); Key (3rd); Jacob Lucas (6th); Griess (2nd)

• The Bobcats also enter Sunday's matchup undefeated with a 2-0 record
• Ohio has defeated Chattanooga (23-19) and Ashland (39-7) in its two duals this season
• In tournaments, the Bobcats finished in a tie for seventh place with Air Force at the Navy Classic and 15th at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational
• Ohio has just seven juniors and seniors combined on its 36-man roster
• Four Bobcats were ranked in the latest InterMat rankings - No. 20 Peyten Kellar (157), No. 11 Garrett Thompson (165), No. 21 Sal Perrine (165) and No. 28 Zayne Lehman (184)
• Thompson, who is just a redshirt sophomore, has been the top wrestler for Ohio this season with a 16-3 overall record and a 2-0 record in duals
• Thompson had an impressive showing at the CKLV Invitational, placing fifth with a 6-2 record. He won his first three matches by fall, one of which was against a ranked wrestler (No. 21 Connor Brady, Virginia Tech). After losing to No. 2 David Carr of Iowa State (15-2 major), Thompson won back-to-back matches against No. 16 Maxx Mayfield of Northwestern (2-0 decision) and No. 8 Matthew Olguin of Oregon State (10-2 major). Thompson narrowly missed out on reaching the third-place match, falling to Michigan's No. 3 Cameron Amine by a 4-1 decision. He took fifth place with a win by fall (5:50) against Stanford's No. 29 Hunter Gavin
• Perrine also garnered a fifth-place finish with a 6-2 record in Las Vegas. He owns a 10-7 record on the year and is 1-1 in duals
• The 184-pound match between Key and Lehman will be one to keep an eye on. The two have faced each other twice in their careers. Key won the first matchup in Navy's dual versus Ohio in 2022 by a 5-2 decision. The two met for the second time last week at the CLKV Invitational, where Lehman took the match by a 4-2 decision to eliminate Key
• Additionally, Cerniglia and Thompson will take the mat together for the second time. Cerniglia defeated Thompson by a 17-4 major decision last season at the Navy Classic 

Navy vs. Ohio History
• The Mids and Bobcats will battle each other in a dual for the second time
• Navy won the inaugural meeting, 21-14, in 2022
• Ohio jumped out to an 11-3 lead through four bouts from a pair of decisions and a technical fall 
• Navy responded by winning five of the final six bouts to claim the first meeting
• Koderhandt (4-3 decision), Cerniglia (5-4 decision) and Key (5-2 decision) recorded victories in the matchup
• Four of coach Kolat's wins have come against the Bobcats. He defeated Ohio three times while at Campbell and guided the Mids in their victory in 2022

• Established in 1909, the Navy wrestling program is in its 116th season as a varsity sport. Head coach John Schutz directed the Mids to a 24-9 victory over Penn on March 13, 1909 in their inaugural dual
• Having amassed a 925-324-26 overall record, Navy captured the program's 900th victory behind a 21-12 victory over Maryland on Dec. 6, 2019
• With 74 NCAA Championship appearances in tow, there are just eight programs who have competed in more - 91 Oklahoma State, 83 Oklahoma, 82 Iowa State, 81 Michigan, 79 Michigan State, 79 Penn State, 77 Lehigh and 76 Illinois. Like Navy, both Iowa and Minnesota have made 74 appearances. 
• The Mids, meanwhile, have the 25th-longest active NCAA Championship appearance streak, having competed in each of the last 25 tournaments. Oklahoma leads the country with 73-straight appearances.
